Metalwork
Two discrete hoards of Late Bronze Age metalwork were recovered (from Trenches 6 and 7 respectively) during archaeological evaluation in June 2004. Further elements of one of these hoards (Hoard 1) were found during subsequent excavation in June 2005; it is almost certain that all elements of this hoard have been recovered. Th…

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Late Bronze Age socketed axe head, a variant of the Taunton-Hademarschen type with oval rather than square mouth. The axe is relatively long and narrow compared to more common forms of socketed axe. the surface is badly corroded with the original surface only surviving in a few areas. The mouth of the socket is oval and adjacent to the mouth is a shallow rounded moulding 16.2mm wide reinforcing this end. This moulding appears to be single but a slight double moulding cannot be ruled out due to the corrosion. It is 26.6mm by 20.4mm just below this swelling. The axe then tapers evenly b…

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
White patinated flint possible knife, as identified by finder. Flake with a notch on either side, perhaps to assist hafting, and with long thin blade removal scars along two sides of a sub-triangular point. It seems that subsequent fine pressure flaking with a point has formed serrated edges at this end, though this is a feature which is more easily felt than seen. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2100-1500 BC.

Object type: FABRICATOR
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Pale cloudy grey flint fabricator, as identified by finder. Elongated biconvex finger-shaped tool shaped by hard hammer working. The object tapers towards a thinner curved end, with casually executed flake removal at the mid point affording a grip for the thumb; the other end is flat, at a recent break. The upper and lower convex surfaces are lightly smoothed, probably by wear during use, though other flaking at the edges represents post-depositional damage. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2100-1500 BC.

A copper-alloy awl of probable Bronze Age date.
Just over half of the artefact is of rectangular section, gradually curving upwards along its length, terminating in a wedge-like terminal. The other portion of the awl is of octagonal section for much of its length, although the pronounced angles dissipate towards the distal end, where there is a circular-sectioned point. The artefact has a deep blueish-green patina and is slightly corroded in places. It measures 72.4mm long, up to 6.2mm wide and 5.9mm high (at the junction between the two sides). The weight is 10.83g.

A ceramic wall/rim sherd, probably of a shallow wide-rimmed bowl, possibly prehistoric but more probably Roman. The vessel was made from reddish or orange coloured clay which was tempered with sand and grit. The inner and outer surfaces are extremely worn and it is probably that the sherd was coated with a slip that has now worn away.

A worn copper-alloy flat axe of the early to middle Bronze Age.
The blade end is crescentic in form, flaring to either side of the axe. The cutting edge is damaged in places but otherwise is in good condition. It has a flat, rectangular body that gradually tapers towards the butt end. Half way along the axe on either side is a shallow stop-ridge that seem to be early forms of the more prominant versions seen on palstaves.
The axe has patches of a brownish patina; the surface is smooth and in good condition.
