Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint tertiary blade with extensive retouch, probably of Mesolithic date. The proximal end has been retouched/chipped with the platform and part of the bulb of percussion removed. Scars on the dorsal face from at least two previous long parallel removals form the same platform. Short semi-abrupt scalar to sub-parallel retouch worked from the ventral side down the entire right edge (looking from the dorsal face). Translucent pale grey-buff flint, 33.9mm long, 13.4mm wide, 3.8mm thick; 1.59 grams.

Three small fragments of flint blades with retouched edges. 1. Proximal end of a knapped flint tertiary blade. Bulb of percussion, bulb scars and ripples on the ventral face. It is triangular in section with a central ridge on the dorsal face. The right edge (looking from the ventral face) has been retouched with short, scalar, semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch from the dorsal face. Retouched snap at the distal end. There appears to be the start of a deliberate retouched notch for snapping the blade in the centre of the left edge before it thickens around the bulb. Dark grey translucent…

Proximal end of a snapped chert tertiary blade of Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The blade has a snap at the distal end, bulb of percussion at the proximal end on the ventral face and arises from previous parallel removals from the same platform on the dorsal face. The edges are chipped but there is a also a small area of retouch in the centre of the left edge, viewed from the dorsal side. Possibly an attempt to further snap the blade. Dark brown chert with white mottling. 28.3mm long, 15.2mm wide and 4.5mm thick; it weighs 2.49 grams.

One fragment of a knapped flint blade and one bladelet or piece of debitage, both probably Mesolithic in date. The bladelet has a bulb of percusison on the ventral face and evidence of previous parallel removals form the same platform on the dorsal face; 0.37 grams. The fragment is the middle section of a blade with clear percussion waves on the ventral face and arises from parallel removals on the dorsal. There are multiple chips from the edges, some of which maybe accidental others may be from deliberate attempts to snap the blade; 0.97 grams. High quality dark grey flint.

Central section of a knapped chert blade. The blade is broken at both the ventral and distal ends. At the ventral end the bulb of percussion has been removed by an irregular snap. There is a knapped notch to the right side which probably started the snap but it has not snapped evenly, creating a point down the left edge. The distal end is straight with short, scalar retouch. One very small Mesolithic blade core in pale to mid-grey flint. It is conical with a prepared platform at the top and angled sides showing repeated, parallel bladelet removals. One side is still covered in cortex suggesting it is pebble flint. There is also a patch of cortex in the middle of the other side, either from a flaw in the flint or suggesting a very small pebble was used. It is illustrates the intense utilisation of available material. It is 24.1 by 17.5mm across the top and 26.4mm long, it weighs 9.82 grams.

The segments have a mix of straight and more irregular breaks, some at least of which are probably deliberate. One knapped flint core and a chunk from a second core. The core has been worked on both sides but there is a natural flaw (air pocket) in the flint on one side and removals from that side appear more irregular and possibly relate to core preparation. The side without the flaw has been worked with regular, parallel blade removals starting at the prepared platform at one end. Cortex covers the distal end and c.20% of the flawed side. This indicates the piece is pebble flint which could be sourced relatively locally. It has been worked to a stage where further removals would be difficu…
