An iron object, possibly a medieval spearhead, arrowhead or harpoon. The object is 365 mm in length. It is therefore very long and thin with a lozenge shaped section. The tang tapers to a point. The main shaft is swollen, but then tapers again towards the head of the object. The head is a long, thin and is a flat leaf shape- missing its point. The head does have a slight lozenge shaped section.

Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A broadly hemispherical corroded cast iron object: probably an incomplete post-medieval cannon ball. There is one area of loss on the inner surface, but the object appears to otherwise be an exact hemisphere allowing us to calculate its original weight. Although an inexact science, comparisons can be made with historic inventories of cannon shot, their dimensions and weights (see Blackmore 1976, 392ff.). These suggest that this ball might have been fired from a post-medieval 'falconet' cannon. As this type endured from the later 16th century through the following century, with slig…

A post medieval - Modern iron incomplete lance head (16th - 17th century). The lance head is broken through the square-sectioned socket and the butt is missing. The blade of the lance head has a square cross-section that narrows to a point. The cross-section changes to circular just before the socket. The walls of the socket have two opposing circular perforations probably for securing the lance head to the wooden haft. The shape of the socket is slightly distorted due to damage. There is no visible marker's mark. The iron is in good condition with no corrosion. Dimensions…

A heavily corroded fragment of an iron spearhead of probable Roman date. The suggested dating of this piece is based on the form of the socket (see below), several examples of which can be seen in the "Catalogue of the Romano-British Iron tools, fittings and weapons in the British Museum" (W.H. Manning; 1985; plates 76-81). The closest parallels to this piece are categorised as Group IV and dated to the mid 1st century AD (Manning; pp. 168). The socket has been formed by bending the metal into an open-backed cylinder which is of roughly equal diameter throughout its length. The edge…
