This knife handle tapers towards the socket for the knife; it is oval in cross-section and the terminal is carved to form a three-dimensional zoomorphic head, probably depicting a horse. The handle is hollowed to approximately half-way along its length to accommodate the tang of the knife. Part of the socket and part of the zoomorphic terminal is broken and missing. The body of the handle is decorated with bands of 3 parallel lines. Of the zoomorphic head the neck, mouth and mane are surviving. The detail on the head is marked by carved lines, for example, one diagonal line marks the jaw and the mane is depicted by a series of transverse short lines. The head is also decorated with two ring and dot motifs on each side of the head; one on the side of the face and one on the neck. This knife handle fits within the panoply of this kind of carving for the late 16th century. T is similar in style to LON-A2DDE5 and LVPL-088561 although both are anthropomorphic rather than zoomorphic. There is a plain, flat, oval foot at the junction between the bowl and the stem. The stem has no distinguishing marks and it broken 25.22mm away from the bowl. The end of the stem is missing. Regular creasing indicates that the sheet was originally folded three times to form a small 'package', c. 37.5 mm square. It was unfolded by the finder. The whole surface is very crumpled, but a series of diagonal incised lines is visible as well as linear incised lines parallel to and just inside the border. It is uncertain whether or not the sheet was inscribed with a text. Dr Roger Tomlin, who examined the object on 31 March, comments: 'The surface is very crumpled, but in two or three places tiny patches of 'writing' can be distinguished from the crumpling; that is, a few strokes or loops inscribed by a blunt point. They may be part of a continuous text, but this remains to be seen'. The state of preservation of thin copper alloy foil (see results of metal analysis below) is remarkable and may be due to burial in anaerobic conditions, perhaps foreshore mud. Date: pre-modern, possibly Roman-period. Dimensions: 144.6 x 75.3 mm and c. 0.1 - 0.2 mm thick. Weight: 2.21 g. Non-destructive surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated that the metal is an alloy of copper with no detectable precious metal. The buckle frame is D-shaped and has been carved in one piece with the buckle plates. The pin pivots on a dowel; the end of which is visible on one side only. The frame has a notched pin rest and is decorated with carved diagonal lines. These diagonal lines are overlain by concentric V-shaped lines around the pin rest. There is a front and back buckle plate, all carved in one. There are two rivet holes for attachment. The corner of the front plate is broken across one of the rivet holes. A very similar buckle was excavated from Jedburgh Abbey (Lewis & Ewart 1995:83-4). This excavated example has a similar construction and decoration but does not appear to have the V-shaped variation around the pin rest and it is also made from horn rather than bone. It is dated to the 12th century. A further similar buckle, also made from bone, has also been excavated from a deserted medieval village at Goltho, Lincolnshire (MacGregor (1985:104-5). This buckle is again of similar construction but the decoration varies again with the V-shaped engravings around the pin rest but not the diagonal lines around the rest of the frame; there are also engraved lines forming a border around the front buckle plate. The figurine is a moulded female figure with stabbed decoration on the necklace, cuffs and down the panel on the front of the dress; the folds of the dress are incised. The head, neck and lower half of the skirt is missing from this figurine; the torso, arms and upper half of the skirt remain. This is a bichrome figurine glazed yellow with some copper green flecks outside and the stabbed decoration coloured green. The interior is hollow and it is not glazed. The fabric is off-white with buff surfaces. A very similar example is published in Hurst, Neal & van Beuningen (1986:237 no.356 fig 112) however there is a slight variation in the style of the necklace and the colour used on the stabbed decoration. This piece of bone inlay appears to be complete with no broken edges. It is a long, thin piece with one short, angled, straight edge, and one curving long edge. The other two edges have been decoratively carved to follow the lines of the pattern carved into the front surface. The front surface is decoratively carved with a scrolling foliate pattern. The reverse of the long curved edge has been chamfered and the reverse surface of the inlay has been randomly scored to help attachment of the inlay to the box or chest. John Clark identified this object as part of decorative bone inlay that would fit into a wooden box or chest and probably dating 14th - 15th century. This bone artefact has been worked to have four flat sides creating a square-shaped cross-section and it is hollow. It tapers from 6.36mm slightly to one end (5.58mm) and more so to the other end (4.17mm). There is wear and damage to both ends. All four sides are decorated with ring and dot motifs. Side one has four sets of three ring and dots arranged to form a trefoil. Side two has two ring and dot trefoils flanked by three ring and dots arranged in a line. Side three is a repeat of side one. Side four has four sets of three ring and dots arranged in lines. Dr Ian Riddler identified this as a needlecase and writes "Not a common object type....but a very very interesting one. The closest parallels for it come from the Continent and are of 4th to 5th century date (mainly 5th century). These things are quite widespread in the north German cremation cemeteries of that date (like Westerwanna and Issendorf, for example) and they are thought to be needle cases. By rights, they ought to appear at Spong Hill, but they don't and they are very rare in this country."
