A rim sherd of a Roman Vectis Ware ceramic vessel (c. 43-c. 350 AD). This coarse ware sherd is burnished on the external face and the breaks are abraded. Height: 36.92mm; width: 37.38mm; thickness: 11.26mm. Weight: 15.53g. 'Vectis ware is hand-made, well finished and relatively hard, being barely scratched with the fingernail. Its internal and external surface is partly reddish-yellow (Munsell Color 5YR 6/6), which is the colour yielded by a characteristic oxidised crust which is usually weakly visible due to a more general darkening of the final surface burnishing. The colour prod…

A body sherd fragment of samian ware, or terra sigilata, pottrey of Roman date. The dark orange-red slip suggests that this may have been produced in either Southern or Central Gaul. samian ware was exported from gaul from teh First to Third centuries AD. The vessel was probably a shallow bowl and has some roulette decoration around it.

A large ceramic greyware spindle whorl which is probably Roman. The object is plano-convex and has a central perforation which is 8.4mm in diameter. The fabric is reduced and fairly soft, a light grey to brown throughout. It has small quartz and grit inclusions including a few large pieces of red stone. One face is shallower than the other. Compare NCL-AAE256 and LIN-6F06A5, but note that spindle whorls are notoriously difficult to date.

A base sherd from a Roman ceramic vessel. It is the base of a small vessel such as a flask or beaker and it probably dates from 150 - 300 AD. The fabric is coarse and fairly soft. It is reduced and light grey in colour. The inclusions are generally very small. They include red and grey particles (grit?) and smaller pieces of quartz. The texture is fine, but the breaks are a little abraded. Only the base of the vessel survives. It is concave and has a diameter of 4.5cm. The side walls slope inwards to the break. Compare the flasks and beakers on page 8-12 of Gillam's "Types of Roman Co…

A copper-alloy handle attachment from a Roman metal vessel. The artefact takes the form of a moulded representation of a human bust, with the circular loop attachment extending upwards from the top of the head. The face is executed in high relief and is angled to the figure's right. The face is of cherubic appearance, with full, rounded cheeks, recessed pellets within pointed oval grooves for the eyes, a low nose and short, closed mouth. An inverted 'u-shaped' groove frames the face, separating it from the hair, which is short and has suggestions of straight, parallel grooves. Benea…

A sherd of Alice Holt/Farnham grey ware. Pale buff-grey reduced fabric with abundant, well sorted quartz sand temper. The exterior surface dark grey to silvery grey and has several horizontal and diagonal burnish lines. A body sherd from a jar. The Alice Holt/Farnham industry was active from the 1st to 4th centuries, but the slightly metallic finish suggests this may be the later product of the industry (i.e. after c AD 200 - 250) It is hard fired and wheelthrown. Date: Roman - c. AD 200 - 400 Weight:11 g See http://potsherd.net/atlas/Ware/AHGW.html

Seventeen sherds of Roman grayware including 4 rim sherds and one base sherd. The sherds range in colour from buff through pale grey to dark grey and some are not entirely reduced. They all have a slightly irregular texture and many of the breaks are abraded. They are fairly soft and have mainly quartz inclusions. Three of the rim sherds are too small to measure the diameter accurately. One has an everted rim, one has a half round beaded rim and the last has an upright rim with a projecting flange. The last rim fragment is larger. It has a rim diameter of about 20cm and has a hal…

A base sherd from a Roman ceramic vessel. The base is flat and has wavy comb marks on its underside. The side forms an angle of approximately 60 degrees with the base and has rilling on its inner face, providing evidence of wheel throwing. The fabric is off-white with a creamy brown core, sand-tempered and has occasional grog inclusions. Dimensions: diameter of base (remaining): 71.4mm; surviving height: 31.8mm; weight: 70.61g. This would appear to be a sherd of Verulamium-region white ware, a coarseware produced in the St. Albans area during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The st…

Seven fragments of differing forms of greyware, probably Roman in date. All the pieces are small thick walled vessels, three are rim fragments, two are base fragments and two are body fragments. Not enough of any fragment has survived to identify the form. They range in colour from light to grey ware, some with light orange surfaces. One is possibly slipped, otherwise they are undecorated. All are wheelmade. The size range is 27.7-50.4mm (length) x 15.5-33.8mm (width) x 9.0-14.1mm (thickness) and collectively weigh 94.40g.

Pedestal base from a Roman beaker. The fabric is white/cream with traces of an orange slip suggesting that this is a Nene-Valley colour coated ware. This shard was however discovered with the use of a metal detector; a small tablet-shaped piece of copper-alloy is stuck to the base, with what might be a thin layer of iron corrosion lining the interior. Sooting is visible around the base of the pot. The copper-alloy appears to be contemporary to the vessel and migth suggest that the vessel was used as a cremation urn, with the metal being the remains of a grave-good.
