A copper alloy pin of probable Roman date. It has a small flattened globular head and there is no collar nor grooves. The shaft is thick, and expands slightly in diameter as it extends further from the head (3.18mm under the head, 3.5mm at the widest point). It tapers again slightly at the far end, but it is not clear whether it is intentionally hipped. The far end is patinated, but may be a break. The pin has a smooth well developed grey green patina. Compare NARC-CBCBE1.

A cast copper alloy globular headed pin, with the stem missing, leaving just a stub at the base of the head. The head is 10.5mm in diameter and 9mm high. The stem has a section of 2.7mm in diameter, and is 2mm long from the head to the break. Globular headed pins are difficult to date accurately, due to their non-diagnostic style and ease of manufacture meaning they were produced in the Roman and Medieval periods. However, this example does not have a collar, and the patina seems consistent with Roman objects, so a tentative Roman date is suggested.

Silvered head of iron pin or needle. A double-ribbed collar decorated with vertical grooves encloses a socket for the iron shank. Above the collar a female bust in high relief is worn and the facial features are missing. A discoidal terminal on the top of the head is pierced by an off-centre round aperture and is decorated on both faces with curving lines of punched dots. An ovoid and slightly concave patch of dark reduced fired clay visible in the centre of the reverse of the bust is surrounded by a raised rim of metal which is turn is surrounded by a dull grey deposit that is probab…

A complete cast copper alloy pin of uncertain date, but probably Roman. It is 90.1mm in length, weighs 4.71g and has a flat discoidal head which has been decorated with two concentric recessed rings and a central circular depression. The diameter of the disc is 11.8mm and it is attached at the back to a circular sectioned shaft. Corrosion round the top of the shaft makes it impossible to tell if the head is integral or a separate piece. The shaft is 2.84mm near the head, and then is swollen in the middle to 3.15mm before tapering to a point. The shaft has bent. The pin has an even med…

Cast copper alloy pin possibly dating to the Roman period, (43-410AD). The object has an oval sectioned shaft and a rectangular sectioned terminal. The terminal is sub-oval in plan. Below the terminal on the outer face is a raised transverse collar. The reverse of the terminal is flat and undecorated. The shaft tapers towards the end which terminates with a break. The shaft has been bent backwards forming a U-shape.
The patina on the object has been removed due to over-cleaning.

A cast copper alloy pin head with the corroded remains of the iron shank. The pin head is globular in form and decorated with multiple incised lines in geometric designs of opposing multi-lined chevrons both above and below a double medial band. The apex of the pin has a circular depression, outlined by two more concentric lines. This double band is repeated on the underside of the pin head, where a mass of corrosion displays the remains of the iron shank.

A worn cast copper-alloy pin or stud of possible Roman date. It has a large globular head from which extends a cylindrical shaft that tapers to a sharp point. All of the surfaces have extensive post-depositional wear and corrosion, with only traces of the original dark brown patina remaining. It measures 38.81mm in length, 8.05mm in diameter (at head), and weighs 3.51g.
This is a copper-alloy pin or stud similar to examples published from Colchester (Crummy, 1983: nos. 2995, 3002), suggesting a date in the Roman period for the current example, c.43-410 AD.

A copper-alloy pin of uncertain date. The pin has a solid plano-convex head with flat band around the side. The shank is circular in cross-section and broken at the base. The pin might be a dress item, but also looks somewhat similar to the pins found on late Roman crossbow brooches.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy pin of Roman date. Only the head survives intact, the shaft now missing due to old breaks. The head is cylindrical in form, cast in a two piece mould with casting seams still visible on opposing sides, perhaps indicating the object was never completely finished off. It has cordoned decoration consisting of a flattened circular terminal knop, beneath which are three small transverse cordons. Between the cordons are larger globular beads, the lower of the two beads having a slight transverse circumferential groove. At the base of the head can be seen the …

Dress-pin with bent and broken shaft, and conical head.
From the photo, it appears that the head is decorated with radiating lines, possibly beaded. Although it was originally undated, the decoration suggests a Roman date; compare BH-82A289, HAMP-904A96, LIN-47B5D5, BH-326846, etc.

The shaft has a circular cross-section with a diameter of 3.30mm that tapers to a diameter of 2.52mm. A complete worked bone hair pin, of mid Roman dating (43 AD to 410 AD).
The head of the pin is flat. The pin tapers in size from the top down to the point. Due to the degree of working, it is hard to identify what type of animal the bone has originally come from, but probably it was fashioned from a metapodial (lower leg) of a cow or sheep sized animal.
The pin measures 75.86mm in length, head diameter is 7.71mm. It weighs 4.1 grams.
Bone pins, like those made from copper alloy, jet or glass, are commonly thought to have functioned predominately as hair pins during the Roman per…

Approximately 75% of the pin is present, consisting of the head of the pin and part of the shaft.
