A Mesolithic flint core. The core has been damaged in the soil, probably by the plough. Certain flakes many have been removed from the core as a result of this action. The core has a large striking platform, which shows evidence of having been prepared. Small notches have been removed from around the edge of the platform to allow the flint knapper to remove smaller blade shaped flakes from the core. This process is characteristic of the Mesolithic-Early Neolithic periods. Over three-quarters of the core is still covered by the flints natural cortex, this suggests that the knapper eith…

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A ovate biface, cordate type Lower Palaeolthic handaxe, from the Middle Achalean period dated to circa 250 000 year BP. It is a large handaxe which has a trimmed butt and is straight sided, the point has been broken off recently. It has soft-hammer reduction. The patination is similar in colour to another flint of this date which was found in the Ouse valley. This flint has not been highly finished, although it does have evidence of re-working. There is a flaw in the flint where probably the frost has started to scatter it.

Greyish/off-white prehistoric flint implement in the form of a core which has been utilised as a hammer-stone. Length 92mm, width 64mm and 42mm thick. Weight 261.43g. Sub-triangular in cross-section at one end and tapering to a bi-facial point at the other end. The core has multiple knapping scars on two of the faces and also at the thicker end. The third face appears to have been formed by natural fracturing. Bruising along one edge is the result of the core being used as a hammer-stone. At the larger end a small area of cortex survives.
