Length: 18.2mm; width: 21.1mm and 8.9mm thick. Weight: 5.02g.

Part of the wings and the lower part of the bow, including the catch-plate, are missing due to old breaks. The pin is also missing.

The fully enclosed (tubular) wings have a maximum width of 21.1mm although they were originally wider prior to being corroded and damaged. It is not clear whether the wings tapered towards their tips or whether they were parallel. The longer wing is decorated with at least two grooves which may have been circumferential but due to corrosion are only visible at the front and on the underside. The other wing may have been similarly decorated but any trace of this decoration has been lost and its surfaces are now corroded and pitted. The wings enclose a corroded iron axis bar, the remains of which is clearly visible at each wing tip and also within the sub-rectangular pin slot at the rear of the wings. The slot measures about 6.0mm x 2.0mm. The bow, convex at the front, tapers from the wings towards an old break. It has a maximum length of 8.8mm and the width at the break is 3.3mm. The bow has a longitudinal median rib which may have been decorated, although in its corroded state no trace of decoration has survived. On either side of the median rib is a less prominent rib. Both of these ribs are decorated with a series of shallow and evenly spaced grooves which are at an angle of about 45° to the median rib and point downwards. The rear face of the bow is flat and plain.

This brooch is in poor condition and is severely corroded and pitted. A matt mid-green patina has survived in places.

AD 475 - c. AD 600). Length: 20.0mm; width: 15.8mm and 5.6mm thick. Weight: 2.68g.

The fragment is probably part of the foot of a small-long brooch or the foot of a radiate-headed brooch. It has old transverse breaks at either end. The break near the catch-plate appears to be more recent than the other break. The front is flat and in plan the sides are curvilinear in profile: they flare outwards and then inwards so that when the foot was complete it was probably sub-lozenge-shaped in plan. The rear face is flat except for the incomplete centrally situated incomplete catch-plate. The front face is decorated with four ring-and-dot motifs along the longitudinal centre-line with two similar motifs, one either side, at the widest part of the foot, all six forming a cruciform shape.

A patchy light to mid-green patina has survived on the front and rear. Although barely visible, tinning is present on the front and rear. There is no evidence for melting or burning.

If the brooch is a small-long type it may be have been similar to two brooches with lozenge-shaped feet in the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology Collections (MacGregor and Bollick 1993, 145-6, refs. 15.78 and 15.79).

Barry Ager, Curator of the Continental Early Medieval Collections at the British Museum, has commented: ‘Depending on the form of the original head-plate this could be part of the foot of a small-long brooch, if it [the head] was rectangular. It's a little difficult to be certain, though, as the head might alternatively have been semi-circular with projecting knobs, and more like a radiate-headed brooch. There have been at least a couple of brooches from Kent in recent years with semi-circular heads and lozenge feet, e.g. one from Littlebourne with ring-and-dot decoration that was recorded at Canterbury Museum in 1999. There was another with similar decoration, but more pronounced lateral lobes on the foot, that is on the PAS database (KENT-09C753). They may be Anglo-Saxon imitations of a possibly North German type, dating from around the late 5th - 6th century’.

The wing is made from a length of silver wire that has been looped twice round to form a double band. The wire has a square cross-section, its evenness along its length suggests it has been drawn rather than hammered. A bezel comprising of a low triangle flanked by two knots have been formed by looping the terminals of the wire once around the frame of the ring, in between the loops one strand of the frame has been bent forward to form a low triangle. The ring is in excellent condition.
This finger ring design has been commonly found in Viking graves and hoards of the later 9th and earlier 10th centuries (Graham-Campbell 1980). A similar example was found at Coppergate, York, dating to between circa 930 - circa 1050 (Mainman, p2585, fig. 1279, no. 10517).
However, in all of the above examples the wire used in the construction of the ring has a circular cross-section. This is a result of the manufacturing process in which a wire would be drawn through a series decreasing holes (which is circular) until the desired diameter is required. Ring that has a square cross-section wire are thought to be 19th century copies. There are four collets spaced evenly around the frame, these taper outwards along the frame giving a sub-triangular cross-section. Each is filled with a white paste that would have been or held a gem decoration. There is a constriction of the pin, which has a circular cross-sectio; the end has been bent around the constriction.
A quarter of the way round the frame from the pin constriction is a second constriction from which a bird shaped pendant is suspended. The bird is displayed, so it faces front with the wings outstretched. The wings are represented by two crescents that are attached to the centre of the main body via a small projection. The bird has an expanded waist which narrows towards the tail, which is represented by a quadrangle. The head and neck are represented by a plain rectangle. Double lines of dots down the centre of the tail, body and wings represent feathers. On the underside of the head is a penannular loop (cf. beak) which attaches the pendant to the frame.

The artefact is in excellent condition with a rich dark greenish/brown patina covering the whole surface. On the underside of the pendant and frame are a series of striations that are original tooling.

The basic brooch is unremarkable; similar examples of the frame are found over much of the country, furthermore the quality of the craftsmanship is rather low when compared to other brooches of the period, perhaps suggesting local manufacture. What makes this object remarkable is the attachment of a decorative pendant. The attachment of such pendants to annular brooches in the Medieval Period is apparently unrecorded. If found separately the bird pendant would most likely have been associated with horse harness pendants rather than a brooch. This artefact represents a previously unknown elaboration in an otherwise simple brooch, possibly a local product.

This artefact probably dates to the 14th century.
