Copper alloy Buckle plate, as identified by finder. Cast oval-ended plate with engrailed edges; the other end is slotted and folded over to retain a frame (lost). A pair of rivets of diameter 2.6mm secured the buckle frame, while a rivet of diameter 2.2mm and length 4.7mm with a burred back - probably one of a pair, though the other is lost at a tear in the plate - set centrally at the oval end held the plate to the strap. Now folded. Suggested date: Late Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1400-1600.

Pottery
Base sherd. Slipware. A hard dull red fabric with splashed internal and external metallic glaze with an external trail of white slip. The vessel, perhaps a cup, had an estimated diameter of 120mm, with a flat base and a stepped foot. The body is corrugated; lightly on the middle part of the outside, and more prominently within. The area bearing white slip also bears crude knife-cut vertical slashes. The impression is of an individualistic piece. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1700.

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: AVON
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation ![]()
A copper alloy strap end. This is a composite piece with a forked spacer that is soldered in between two copper alloy plates, both of the plates are now missing, so only that forked spacer remains. This consists of a forked spacer with an oval terminal which has a hole in the centre. The forward edge has a lug with a horizontal piecing.
It is suggested that such strap ends were arranged in pairs and that they may be book fasteners rather than dress accessiories (Egan, G and Pritchard, F, 1991, p155 ). Reference: Egan, G and Pritchard, F, 1991 "Dress Accessories", page 154-5, No. 72…

Strap End. Cast zoomorphic split-ended strap end, of slightly waisted form and more elongated than most observed by this reporter. An elongated beast snout terminal with long and pointed lupine ears is, unusually, modelled on both sides. On that less worn side, the eyes are represented by a pair of tiny ring and dot, and whiskers are modelled running across the jowls. Behind the ears a bordered panel of angular interlace extends to the rear split end; it incorporates recurring triangular configurations. The border was observed on the reverse, though interlace was not ca…
