A Medieval book clasp dating from the late 14th to early 15th century. It is rectangular in plan with a rounded end from which projects a long pointed terminal. There is a circular peg hole through the rounded part. The other end is broken across a rectangular slot that would have formed a hinge with the strap end. Similar examples are illustrated on page 279 of Egan's Medieval Households, but this example differs in the form of the projection. The examples in Egan have a zoomorphic terminal with a transverse hole though. This one is a simple spike and is not pierced.
