Record ID: YORYM-934DB4
Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is conical with a wide circular base which tapers to a narrow apex. A central perforation runs longitudinally through the weight. There are no marks or decoration present on the object and there are no signs of an attachment loop. The metal is a light brownish-white colour and is worn. The weight is 15.1mm tall, 14.2mm in diameter at the base and weighs 14.2g. Due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnostic features it is not possible to date this object any more closely and may date from the Roman to post-medieval periods.

An incomplete cast copper alloy pin of uncertain date. The head of the pin is globular and undecorated. A circular sectioned shaft protects off-centrally from the base of the pin head and tapers to a worn break. The shaft is bent and twisted. Due to the lack of any further contextual evidence coupled with the worn nature of the object it is not possible to date this pin head any more closely and it may date from the early-medieval period through to the post medieval period. The metal is a mid brownish-green colour and is worn. The pin head is 18.7mm long, 9.2mm in diameter and weigh…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete ,cast lead alloy token of uncertain date. A roughly circular lead alloy disc, which has a crudely cast "M "or an "E" like design on one surface. The reverse side is blank , and the token has begun to degrade around its circumference. It measures 22.3mm in diameter, has a thickness of 5.7mm, and weighs 7.5g. it is suggested that the token could be of Roman date however tokens of this type are hard to date with certainty, so broader dates have been given in the record.

A complete, age uncertain, Roman-Post Medieval, cast, lead alloy, small/medium size, homemade unofficial trader's weight. The weight has a circular shape, fairly flat, although one side is slightly thicker than the other. There is a feint crease across the middle where it was slightly bent by the plough and a small, off centre triangular indentation on one side. The weight has little wear but it otherwise has an even matt, white coloured surface. This weight could date between 43-1799AD. Ref. Object type: ANCHOR
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A very large lead alloy weight or possible anchor of unknown date. It is a flat, seven sided slab of lead alloy with an irregular circular hole though it. There are deep scratches on one face. It is 168mm by 160mm in plan, 50mm thick and weighs 6.5kg. This find is clearly a weight designed to hang from an attachment through the hole. The finder interprets it as an anchor because the area where it was found was a 500 acre lake before it was drained in the 17th century. It is similar is size and shape to other archaeological anchor stones such as IOW-BF2C26, one found in London (http:…

County: Somerset

Conical cast lead weight of unknown date. It has a hole through the centre running from top to bottom. The sides are irregular with several indents and there is an irregular raised border around the bae. It is 24.4mm long, 22.6mm wide and 13.05mm thick. It weighs 31.38 grams. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval. Although lead spindle whorls can be similar in general form the irregularity of this example makes it unlikely it was used as a whorl.

Three amorphous blobs of copper alloy with rounded shapes that suggest they are cooled runs of liquid metal and two posslbe mis-cast pieces or other waste. Of the latter two one is a flat piece of copper alloy with one roughly right angle corner and the opposite edge bent up at c.70 degrees, 22.65grams. The other is a thicker flat piece with again one edge bent up through a curve to 70 degrees and the opposite edge turned down at a right angle, with an irregular break across it, c.19.44 grams. Copper-alloy tweezers. Tweezers can be difficult to date as they alter very little between the start of the Roman period through to the early Anglo-Saxon period (43-750). These tweezers are formed from a single strip of copper-alloy that has a rectangular cross-section. The strip has been bent in half to form a suspension loop at the closed end. The external surface of the loop has a slight 'U' shaped depression along the centre that stops on both sides before the two sides of the strip come together again. The oval gap created by the loop has a length of 2.76mm and width of 1.32mm. T…

A complete but broken into two fragments, late Medieval-Victorian, wrought/forged, rusty iron chest or door key. A medium size, very rusty, relatively plain key with circular bow handle, shank with possible collar and rectangular bit. The heavy encrusted corrosion masks any fine detail but the bit could possibly consist of a nose and two bullets. Badly rusted, irregular encrusted surface but also corroded and broken right through just below the handle. This key could date between 1400-1899. Ref. A piece of tap slag of uncertain date from Roman to Post Medieval. It is dense, magnetic and black to purple in colour. It forms a thick plate which is rough and irregular on the lower face, with characteristic runs of solidified molten metal across the top face. This piece is just one small example of the many pieces recovered from the same place. Tap-slag is slag that is 'tapped' from a bloomery furnace. This is carried out during smelting so as to allow the long continuance of the operation. It cools to a solid slag with marked flow lines. There were fewer bloomeries after the…
