Pot sherd of Roman date. The sherd may be a rim sherd with a simple upright rounded rim but due to abrasian of the edges it is not possible to be entirely certain (NB. The photo shows the possibly rounded rim edge at the bottom of the photo). The sherd also has a narrow undulating flange running around the vessel. When whole the vessel was probably a jar or possibly a bowl. The fabric is creamy-white in colour, with notable reddish iron-staining. Although not the typical mortaria product this fabric probably belongs to the Mancetter-Hartshill type series. It is creamy-white in colou…

Body: 38.71x37.39x9.18mm, 12.89g. A French clay tobacco pipe with enamelled decoration. David Higgins comments: The top of the bowl would have been dipped in white enamel (a small part still remaining), and the foliage decoration is picked out in green. This style of pipe was produced from c1850-1920 but a late C19th date is perhaps most likely. It is also worth noting that the broken stem has been ground down for reuse - so someone clearly cherished this pipe! This type of pipe would have been much more expensive than the common types of short-stemmed cutty pipe produced in England at this time.
