Object type: PIPE (SMOKING)
Broad period: MODERN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete cast copper alloy pipe dating from the 19th century. David Higgins (Clay Pipe Specialist, Merseyside) suggests that this is an Asian pipe, even though it is difficult to find close parallels for it. It probably is not from as far away as China, Japan or India, but probably the Near East. Dating of these pipes proves difficult because of the lack of good reference works or closely dated examples. However, Mr Higgins doubts that a pipe like this would have found its way to this country much before the 19th century, and this is why he suspects this is the likely date. It is a ve…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MODERN
County: Wakefield
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small circular cast copper alloy weight, dating from the early 19th century. The weight was part of a 'nest of weights' and has a small rim around the upper surface in which a small weight would have fitted. The weight itself would have sat in the heavier weight underneath. The upper surface is stamped with a crowned 'WR' standing for WILLIAM REX, for William IV (1830 - 1837). This style of mark was introduced after the Acts of 1795 and 1797 and was an alternative to the earlier London marks of a dagger and an ewer found on official weights (Biggs, Antique Weights, page 10). This we…

Part of a stone (slate) pencil probably dating from the 19th century. This would have been used for writing on slates. It is a circular sectioned rod, broken at one end and tapering to a point at the other. The break reveals the laminated structure of the slate. The pointed end is square in section and irregular, perhaps having been broken at some point. Compare NLM-5E9762 and NLM-71B667.

Black opaque glass Probable Pin. Fragment, probably from the expanded section of the shaft of a hipped pin. Though pins of jet were made in the Roman and later periods, this reporter is unaware of examples made of glass. This is most likely to be an item of jewellery imitating jet, a material which became especially fashionable for mourning wear after the death of Queen Victoria's beloved consort Prince Albert in 1861. The object is perhaps water worn, though prolonged abrasion against hair or clothing might impart a similar smoothing. Reported along with another item of black glas…
