A Roman silver plated denarius of Nero (AD 54-68), dating to the period c.AD 60-61 (Reece period 3). PONTIF MAX TR P VII COS IIII P P, EX S C reverse type depicting EX S C within a wreath. Prototype of the mint of Rome. cf. RIC I (2nd ed.), p. 151, no. 22. The silver plating is slightly worn and is damaged around the edges, revealing the corroded copper-alloy core. It measures 16.6mm diameter by 1.8mm thick and weighs 2.48g.

A plated silver Roman denarius of the Civil Wars, dating to the period c.AD 68 (Reece period 3). S P Q R reverse type depicting the legend within an oak wreath. Prototype minted in Gaul. cf. RIC I (2nd ed.), p. 208, no. 66. This appears to be a plated copy of a denarius issued by Vindex of Gaul at the time of his rebellion against Nero. The official coin was minted in AD 68 between early March, when Vindex rebelled against Nero's regime, and May, when his rebellion was crushed by Verginius Rufus (Sutherland, p. 198).
