A fragment of ceramic tile of probable Roman date but uncertain function in a mid orange fabric with frequent grog inclusions. The tile has a slight curvature but is probably a piece of tegula (rectangular roof tile) rather than an imbrex (ridge tile). The piece is 89.1mm long by 69.4mm wide and 24.2mm thick. It weighs 201.08g.

The object is a probable base fragment from a crucible or mould which David Symons (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery) suggests possibly dates to the 15th to 17th centuries, or Late Medieval to Post Medieval. The object is ceramic and is incomplete. The material is mid pinkish-red in the centre, and is very hard and brittle which suggests that the object has been heated at a very high temperature, either over or in a fire. The material has occasional sub-rounded inclusions of quartz (less than 1mm). The fragment is 99.4mm x 69.9mm at the base, 53.1mm high and 34.1mm thick. The…

Four fragments of Roman roof tile (tegulae), each comprising, at least partially, of the side flange. A minimum of three different fabrics are represented by the assemblage. The largest piece is light yellowish-orange in colour, has occasional grog (crushed ceramic) inclusions, and is similar, but not exactly the same, as two of the other tiles. The fourth tile is completely different, being much thinner in section and made of a more highly-fired, dark reddish-brown fabric with small gritty temper material. All of the fragments show signs of abrasion. The largest m…

Five fragments of ceramic box flue tiles from a Roman hypocaust system. The five fragments appear to represent at least four different fabrics - ranging from dull orangey-brown with fine stone inclusions, to deep orange and with much more frequent and coarse temper material. They also differ in thickness, perhaps suggesting the presence of several buildings or periods of construction. The upper surface of each tile has a series of scored lines, which is designed to act as a key for plaster. The largest fragment measures up to 100.3mm long by 68mm wide a…

An incomplete unifaced cast lead alloy token of probable late medieval / post-medieval date (1400 - 1650). The design on the upper face is off centre and depicts a crudely formed single mast ship with a hollow hull with a single central pellet (possible forming a rose). It is likely that this design is a direct copy from a rose noble (gold coin dated to the later medieval period). The reverse is plain. The token is sub-circular in plan and measures 18.8mm diameter is 2.9mm thick, and weighs 4.71 grams.

An incomplete unifaced cast lead alloy token of probable late medieval / post-medieval date (1400 - 1650). The design on the upper face consists of a central pellet around which four evenly spaced concentric raised circles are present. The reverse is plain. The token is sub-circular with a small casting lug or knop on the edge of the disc. This suggests that the tokens may have originally been cast in strips and divided later. The token measures 29.1mm length, 14.7mm width, is 2.3mm thick, and weighs 3.19 grams.
