Object type: POT SHERD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Pottery body sherd decorated with a single impressed twisted cord in two lines, with one line running horizontally, parallel to the rim, and the other obliquely at about a 45 degree angle.
The surface and core of the sherd have been oxidised to an orangey brown colour. The interior surface of the sherd has been wiped, and there is the impression of the textile used on the surface, probably before reaching the 'leather-hard' stage while drying, in order to remove surface condensation. The fabric looks, from macroscopic investigation, to have mica, white feldspar, and grey augite incl…

Object type: GOUGE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Late Bronze Age cast copper alloy socketed gouge, dating 1000-800BC. The gouge is sub-rectangular in plan, decreasing in with from the socketed end, before expanding out at the working edge. It is circular in cross section at the socketed end, however the mouth edge has been damaged and broken. The upper surface of the gouge has a recess along two thirds of its length, starting at a point located 26.42mm below the mouth, which widens out towards the blade end, forming a 'V' shaped depression along the length of the gouge. This recess changes the cross section of the gouge to crescentri…

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast cu-alloy flat axe dating to the Early Bronze Age. It is complete but in very poor condition. Over 90% of the original surface have eroded away and only patches of it remain on only one side of the axe. These patches of original patina, however, display grooved decoration which was applied in horizontal and vertical rows on the main body/centre of the axe. The complete decoration would have similar to that of an axe found in Bunrannoch, Scotland, which was described by T Cowie and B O'Connor in their 2001 paper on flat axes from Scotland in the Festschrift for JJ Butler (O'…

A large lump of copper, it's rounded appearence suggests it has cooled from molton metal in a crucible or other mould. One side is almost flat, the top is domed and the sides rounded, it may originally have been oval as it appears to have been cut on one face, the cut is now worn. It may have been made on site or have been carried here for metal working.
It is difficult to give this item an exact date although study of the composition might help, a date of Bronze Age - post-medieval has thus been given although it is likely to sit within the earlier part of this range.

A copper alloy low flanged (broad blade) palstave dating from the Middle Bronze Age (1500-1150). The transverse butt is slightly uneven and incomplete. The septum is flat on both sides of the palstave. Flanges surround the septum, except at the butt. These flanges increase in height towards the blade, with the zenith at the curved stop. The protruding stop is positioned over a third of the way down the palstave. There is a loop between the stop and the blade on one of the sides of the palstave. There is some visible evidence of casting flashes running down the centre of both side…

Cast cu-alloy rapier blade dating from the Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1500-1250BC. It is likely to belong to the Acton Park 2, Taunton (Cemmaes) or Pennard metalwork assemblage, corresponding to Needham’s (1997) Period 5, c. 1500-1150BC. The hilt (which was made from perishable material such as antler, wood or bone) is missing and so are the rivets with which it was attached to the blade. The blade itself was very thinly cast and is very worn today.

Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast cu-alloy short flanged axe dating from the Middle Bronze, ca. 1500-1150BC. This axe is likely to belong to the Acton Park 2, Taunton (Cemmaes) or Pennard metalwork assemblage, corresponding to Needham's (1997) Period 5, c. 1500-1150BC. The axe is very worn, especially the lower part and the blade. A curious feature is that one side the flanges are much longer than on the other. This is unusual; normally the flanges are of equal lengths on both sides. The blade is narrowly, but much curved and a couple of dents and nicks might indicate wear. The upper part of the axe is not as …

Incomplete socketed side-looped spearhead dating to the Middle Bronze Age. The spearhead is likely to belong to the Acton Park 2, Taunton (Cemmaes) or Pennard metalwork assemblage, corresponding to Needham's (1997) Period 5, c. 1500-1150BC. The spearhead is corroded and incomplete, missing most of the blade and some of the socket on one face. The spearhead was likely to have been short and similar to Savory (1980) nos. 227 - 230, which Savory argues are of Acton Park metal, although no. 228 gave an analysis suggesting Pennard metal. A side-looped spearhead from the Thames at Mortla…

Object type: MULLER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fine-grained granite elvan muller or rubbing stone. The muller is oval in plan, with two rounded ends, and plano-convex in section. The muller is flat and smooth on the face that was used for rubbing, and convex on the opposite face, where it was held and pushed across a base for grinding. The muller would have been used with a larger saddle quern to grind grain between the stones to make flour.
The elvan is a fine grained granitic inclusion and contains pale pink felspars and black quartz. The soft felspars would work into hollows and the hard quartz would stand proud of the surfa…
