An iron Early Medieval weaving baton or sword beater probably dating from the 9th century. It is a long tapering iron blade with a socketed end. The baton has been bent near the socket, but is otherwise in good condition. The socket is U shaped in section and has a rivet hole near the handle end. The socket tapers from the handle end towards the blade. At its widest, the socket is 30.55mm across, and 18.2mm thick from front to back. The top of the blade is 28.9mm wide and 9.3mm thick. Stress marks in the rust suggest that the damage was post depositional. The blade is bent at about…

A complete circular, probably wrought iron disk, of uncertain dating, but probably Post Medieval to Modern (AD 1700 to AD 1900). The iron disk is circular in plan, and rectangular in section. No decoration is present on either surface. It has a diameter of 21.10 mm and is 4.26 mm thick. It weighs 3.4 g. Both surfaces of the disk are covered with a layer of a corrosion product (iron oxide commonly known as rust). Due to the corrosion product, it is hard to determine what the original function of this artefact was. It was possibly a coin or token but other identifications and func…

Fragment of unidentified object made from iron with a white-metal coating (perhaps tin) on the decorated face. The surviving piece is flat and roughly rectangular, measuring 18.4mm long and 11.0mm wide; there are no identifiable original edges. It is decorated with a pair of circular domed bosses with square or lozenge-shaped flat tops. The white metal has worn away here and there is some lumpy iron corrosion. Around the bosses is a groove with very fine transverse ribbing in the base. Outside this, each boss has a penannular ridge when appears to end in a pellet in the centre of the …

An unidentified artefact of high iron content metal. Sub-rectangular in plan, with rounded corners and one end wider then the other, and with transerve grooves at the wider end, the object takes the form of an animals paw, or foot. Slightly bent, there are two grooves on the reverse of the object. Bothe ends appear broken. The wear and corrosion of this object make an identification difficult. Images have been sent to curators at teh British Musuem, and to Finds Advisors of the PAS, and so this record will be updated in due course.
