An iron key of probable later medieval date (1350 - 1500). When found (c. 1970's) the key was heavily corroded and has since been cleaned and all corrosion products removed. The key is complete and broadly sub rectangular in plan. It consists of an irregular oval (kidney) shaped loop which extends into a irregular broadly square sectioned bar (shank). The edges of this section are faceted / chamfered (although it is difficult to be sure due to it being cleaned) and the section tapers along its length. From the lower edge of the shank a sub-rectangular bit projects. The bit is broadly …

A complete, Late Medieval-Victorian, wrought/forged, rusty iron door key. The key is large in size, very rusty and relatively plain. The key has an oval bow handle, solid shank with possible collar just before the rectangular bit with possible cleft and bullets. The pin projects a little forward beyond the bit. The key is badly rusted with an irregular encrusted surface. This is likely to date to 1400 - 1899. Ref. Keys - Their History & Collection, Eric Monk, Shire Publications 1979, page 13-26 and Detector Finds 3, Gordon Bailey, Greenlight Publications 1997, page 4-9 no. 41-42. The …

A complete but broken into two fragments, late Medieval-Victorian, wrought/forged, rusty iron chest or door key. A medium size, very rusty, relatively plain key with circular bow handle, shank with possible collar and rectangular bit. The heavy encrusted corrosion masks any fine detail but the bit could possibly consist of a nose and two bullets. Badly rusted, irregular encrusted surface but also corroded and broken right through just below the handle. This key could date between 1400-1899. Ref. Keys - Their History & Collection, Eric Monk, Shire Publications 1979, page 13-26 and Dete…

An unidentified corroded iron object, probably a handle from a key or a similar object. A faceted suspension loop, collared, above a transverse moulding which continues as short projections to either side above a rectangular sectioned shaft with a median arris or casting seam on either short side, and terminating in a break. An almost-complete post-medieval iron key of 16th or 17th century date. The oval bow is broken and missing a small part of its lower edge, but retains its distinctive shape with two internal projections. The stem is cylindrical, at its thickest at the bow end, until a point where there is a double collar, and then it narrows in section to the bit. The bit is simple in design, a rectangle with no obvious clefts but with its lower edge angled or slightly thickened to form a flange. The end of the stem appears solid and is in line with the end of the bit. The key measures 80.0mm in lengt…

The key has an oval bow measuring 48.70x30.52mm (internal 41.35x23.17mm), the edges of which are D-shaped in cross-section and stand c.6mm high. The stem is circular in cross-section, thickening from 8.84mm diameter beyond the bow to 12.03mm diameter before the bit. It extends c.10mm beyond the bit, and measures 9.35mm in diameter at the end.
The bit comprises two sections, a Z and backwards Z projecting from a short collar and placed slightly …

A complete Medieval iron key, now quite corroded and with some metal missing. The bow is oval, the stem short and square in cross-section, and the bit is rectangular, with a cleft cut in the lower part of the rear edge (towards the bow) and another cleft cut into the upper part of the front edge. This upper cleft creates a division between the bit and the end of the stem, which does not extend quite as far as the end of the bit; it is probably broken off short.
Existing measurements in its corroded condition are: overall length 47.8mm, thickness of stem 6.2mm, the bit measures 18.8…
