Record ID: NCL-1A4A67
Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast iron harness boss of Post-Medieval date, probably c. 1600-1700.
The boss is incomplete, missing approximately 40% of the object. The boss is composed of a dome with a flat projecting rim, and a projecting knob, possibly conical, at its peak. The object has suffered from corrosion, which has obscured any detail of decoration and some form, for example with the knob. There is no evidence for the attachment method of the boss.

Object type: MACE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A possible cast-iron head of a Medieval or Post-Medieval mace or 'morning star', dating c. 1300-1600.
A corroded spherical head is all that remains of the possible weapon, but the head has a number of sub-circular breaks on its surface that can be distinguished from corrosion, suggesting a number of protrusions/projections. There is no complete or even partial survival of such a projection, and the size of the base is variable, with most within a base diameter range of 7-10mm. These projections are found in two rings at roughly a 45 degree angle above and below the centre/equator. T…

Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Gateshead
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast iron cannonball of Post-Medieval date, probably dating to 1640 or later.
The cannonball is spherical with an even coat of corrosion across its surface. There may be some indication through the corrosion of the flashmarks, from the two moulds from which the ball was cast.
The weight is approximated at 2.5kg or 5lbs.

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A hand-wrought iron knife, probably Early Medieval in date, but feasibly from any point between the late Roman to Medieval period.
The knife is incomplete and is in two parts. The blade has a narrow tang of rectangular section, closer in position to the back of the blade, but slightly offset. Two points with thinner and slightly different corrosion may suggest the position of rivets that would have attached the handle plates to the tang.
The knife blade itself was probably triangular, and has a broader face to it than most Medieval examples and fits best in the late Roman and Ear…

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Iron head of an Adze, heavily corroded, dating from any point in the Roman to Modern periods.
In plan, the adze has a trapezoidal head with a projecting base. In profile the adze is triangular with a gentle curve. The projecting base that fits into a haft is subsquare in section while the main blade of the tool is rectangular in section.
The edge is more extensively worn in one corner, and this wear combined with the curvature of the blade indicates that the user was probably right-handed.

Object type: SPEAR
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete, iron spearhead of probable Roman date, c. 50-410.
The spear is very corroded, with considerable expansion through the corrosion process, distorting the shape and measurements. The majority of the blade is missing, but the remaining elements indicated a leaf-shaped blade on a socket. The corrosion is such that the shoulders of the blade appear to merge with the top of the socket, and no edge remains.
