Object type: FURNITURE FITTING
Broad period: MODERN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast iron decorative fitting in the form of a two-dimensional lion's head with mane, probably dating from the 19th century. The reverse of the lion is curved and the iron is stepped, which would have resulted in the central vertical panel being lower than the opposing two sides. The central panel has a large screw hole towards the base; on the front side of the fitting this screw hole is counter-sunk. There is some damage to the top of the lion's head, and one of the higher reverse panels appears missing, when compared to other examples. It is possible that this may have adorned the…

Object type: TONGS
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Pair of simple iron tongs for lead shot with plain handles. Near the cross-over of the arms is stamped the number '48'. Unsure what this relates to. More utilitarian and longer than 17th and 18th century known examples, therefore suggest an 18th to 19th century date. A lead shot remains in the jaws, which both formed of 'cups' - on one side of the jaws is a circular hole (semi-circular on each jaw) that may be for pouring in molten metal? Musket ball found in tongs is slightly too big to enable jaws to be fully closed - ball is 13.17mm dia/0.538 of an inch, and has a small casting spu…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete socketed Medieval iron arrowhead, tanged broadhead type with one barb missing. These objects were used primarily between AD 1066-1400, after which the styles generally changed to deal with advances in armour. However arrowheads of all shapes and sizes were in use during the medieval period and without robust archaeological evidence it is not possible to refine the dating as yet. Larger broadhead arrows were likely to be used for hunting rather than warfare, the arrows for which tended to be smaller and lighter with shorter barbs or were bodkins (Borg 1991:79).
