Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find waiting to be validated
An iron artillery ball, now in a corroded state. The ball was found in a garden on the edge of Reading and may well relate to the siege of Reading during the English Civil War when, in April 1643, Parliamentary forces, using cannon, beseiged the Royalist garrison which later surrendered. The ball weighs 14 3/8 ounces (406g).

Iron Possibly Wrought Iron Spokeshave, slicker or drawknife. A pointed tang of length circa 40mm is set at right angles to a heavy blade with a V-section cutting edge and a rectangular section back; the cutting edge begins circa 22mm from where the tang joins the back of the blade. It is angled by use and/or sharpening on the same side as the projecting tang. This differs from lighter forms of drawknife in that the tang is not in the same plane as the blade. The object is in good condition, which may indicate a fairly recent date, and perhaps a blade of good quality steel. Suggested da…

A cast iron harness boss of Post-Medieval date, probably c. 1600-1700. The boss is incomplete, missing approximately 40% of the object. The boss is composed of a dome with a flat projecting rim, and a projecting knob, possibly conical, at its peak. The object has suffered from corrosion, which has obscured any detail of decoration and some form, for example with the knob. There is no evidence for the attachment method of the boss.

A complete circular, probably wrought iron disk, of uncertain dating, but probably Post Medieval to Modern (AD 1700 to AD 1900). The iron disk is circular in plan, and rectangular in section. No decoration is present on either surface. It has a diameter of 21.10 mm and is 4.26 mm thick. It weighs 3.4 g. Both surfaces of the disk are covered with a layer of a corrosion product (iron oxide commonly known as rust). Due to the corrosion product, it is hard to determine what the original function of this artefact was. It was possibly a coin or token but other identifications and functions a…

Three irregular fragments of iron bloomery waste (slag) or fuel ash, of Iron Age to Late Medieval dating (800 BC to AD 1600). All three fragments are light for their size, which would suggest that minimal iron metal is present within the matrix. All have a honeycomb structure, formed of solidified air bubbles. The measurements are as follows: 1: Length: 24.53 mm. Width: 23.04 mm. Thickness: 15.25 mm. Weight: 3.8 g. 2: Length: 50.57 mm. Width; 31.64 mm. Thickness: 21.75 mm.
