A cast copper-alloy probable finger ring of the Medieval period, c<\/em>. 1200-1400.<\/p>\n

The ring is incomplete, retaining only the bezel. The bezel is disc-shaped with a decorated face inlaid with enamel. The face has an outer circle with small trapezoidal cells filled with blued enamel, while the inner circle is quartered with the cells filled with red enamel.<\/p>\n

One side of the bezel retains a slight projection of the hoop, and the opposite side of the bezel has broken edges. The underside is worn and corroded.<\/p>\n

A cast copper-alloy clasp, possibly a sword belt fitting of Post-Medieval date, c<\/em>. 1550-1750.<\/p>\n

The clasp has a sub-triangular body in plan, with a hooked end and an incomplete strap frame at the opposite end. The rectangular frame for taking a strap is broken, with only the bases of the arms projecting from the body of the clasp.<\/p>\n

The surface has scrolling vegetal motif in relief, though obscured by corrosion. The underside of the clasp retains a thick, compact layer of iron corrosion.<\/p>\n

The decoration suggests a late 16th or 17th century date. A cast copper-alloy bar mount of Medieval date, probably 14th century.<\/p>\n

The mount is largely complete, consisting of a sub-rectangular bifoliate plate or base and a long rectangular shank or bar, U-shaped in section, ending in an oval knop. A circular hole near the baseplate and at the end of the bar indicate that the mount was held in place by nails. The surface is very corroded with largely missing patina, though a trace of gilding can be see where the baseplate and bar join, and around the hole near the baseplate.<\/p>\n

A cast copper-alloy harness pendant displaying the arms of England (1198-1340)<\/p>\n

The harness pendant is complete, with a cast integral suspension loop centred on the top edge of a shield-shaped pendant. The pendant has a sunked field bearing red enamel, with a column of three lions passant guardant in raised copper-alloy, which would have been golden in colour prior to the corrosion of the metal.<\/p>\n

The harness pendant represents the royal arms of England from the reign of Richard I-Edward III, and probably was lost by a member of the royal guard or entourage during a visit to the Anglo-Scottish borders, mostly probably during the reigns of Edward I or II.<\/p>\n

An incomplete cast lead doll of Post-Medieval date, c<\/em> 1650-1670.<\/p>\n

The doll is the upper half of the woman only, cast with detailed in moulded relief. The doll has a domed face with eyes and nose in relief, framed by flaring collar to each side and a row of curled hair above. A pearl necklace separates the face and the body, which has a strip of square panels running down each side and the centre of the chest, between a pair of domed breasts. The arms emerge from the shoulder and bend down at the elbow in narrow sleeves, such that each arm is shaped like the number 7. The arms join the body at the waist, but a fold or bend has snapped the lower body off of the doll.<\/p>\n

The reverse is also decorated, bearing the same deocration as the face, but lacking a pearl necklace.<\/p>\n

The flake is sub-rectangular in plan and section. One face has three long facets, but none of the edges have been shaped by further knapping or flaking or indicate any wear. The shape of the flake suggests a primary or secondary flake from a core.<\/p>\n

The fastener has a flat discoidal head without a back section, such that the disc is D-shaped in plan, and rectangular in section. A triangular, openwork attachment plate is cast integral with the head, though in contrast with most button and loop fasteners, the apex of the triangle is at the far end of the fastener rather than beneath the head. <\/p>\n

A cast copper-alloy harness pendant suspension mount of the Medieval period, c<\/em>. 1200-1500.<\/p>\n

The suspension mount is cruciform with a collared and bell-shaped terminal with a projecting knop at the end of three arms. Each terminal has a circular perforation, with the two side-extending arms retaining the bent nails that attached the suspension mount to the harness strap. The fourth, downward extending arm is shorter in length than the other three and ends with a pair of lugs. An axel connects these two lugs and a third central lug that extends from the fixture to the actual pendant (no missing). The axe is worn, but it is complete. The crescent-shaped blade tapers at its shoulders to the butt of the axehead. A very low relieve stop is visible on each face of the septum, with triangular flanges over and under the septum. The butt has suffered some minor damage to its rounded end. There is no evidence for a loop on the upper face of of the axehead.<\/p>\n

Both cores are sub-triangular in plan, and can be described as roughly wedge-shaped. The smaller core has been further struck\/knapped, with many flakes removed. The larger core is probably unworked, but retains some outer cortex on one face.<\/p>\n
