A fragment from a cast gilded copper-alloy cast saucer brooch of early Anglo-Saxon date, dating from circa AD 450 to 550. The remains of the brooch show that the front surface was decorated with a moulded 'running spirals' design. Some of the gilding has abraded away, exposing a black surface. Elsewhere patches of green copper corrosion are visible. On the reverse the remains of the broken hinge for the pin, or possibly the catchplate, are visible. The brooch fragment measures 23.64 mm long, 17.07 mm wide, 1.89 mm thick and weighs 2.2 grams.

There is a worn zoomorphic snout at the closed end with very prominent ears emphasised by deep circular depressions. At the attachment end, the strap end splits into two plates leaving a space for the strap. There are two rivet holes in the attachment end. See FRG Datasheet 32.

A copper-alloy mount from an Early Medieval hanging bowl. The mount is circular; the edges are slightly damaged, but the majority of the mount survives. The mount is thick and convex in profile, suggesting it is a mount from the side of the bowl rather than the base. The front is decorated with moulded cell recesses; one central circle which is surrounded by smaller circles at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. In between these four circles are trefoil cell recesses. All of these cells are set with numerous small square and circular panels of fine millefiori glass. The central circular cell h…

An incomplete cast copper alloy early-medieval saucer brooch. The brooch is in poor condition, possibly not of the best quality originally; the brooch is sub-circualr and retains only a small fragment of its flared rim; an anthropomorphic face maskdecorates the front of the brooch, depicting hairline, eyebrows and nose, open oval eyes and an open mouth. No evidence of gilding can be seen, and the reverse of the brooch retains only a trace of the catchplate. Although usually face masks are seen on button brooches, this example is too large to qualify and is therefore labelled a saucer …
