A lead steelyard weight dating to the Roman period. The weight is primarily bi-conical in shape with the remains of an iron suspension loop extending from both ends. However the weight is significantly misshapen on one side, giving the appearance best described as ‘something having exploded outwards from within the weight, resulting in the lead having parted (mostly on one of the two cones, i.e. the upper cone being more effected than the lower) and pushed outwards. A square sectioned iron bar encased in a sheath of shaped lead of unknown date, possibly Roman. The sheath of lead is decorated with a moulded design and from one edge extends an irregular triangular sectioned bar of lead. A parallel is unknown.
The artefact measures 63.7mm length, 27.1mm width, and is 30.8mm thick. The triangular sectioned bar extends 33.3mm and is 13.1mm maximum thickness. The iron bar measures 20.0mm x 19.2mm. The artefact weighs 292.35 grams

A lead miniature toy jug, dating from the Medieval period c. 1250-1500. The body of the jug is rounded but has been squashed in. The upper half of the body is rectangular shaped and the base is circular. The spout is circular in section and a flange joins the spout to the body of the vessel. The handle of the jug is missing. The jug has a light brown patina. It has a length of 39.68 mm, width 29.40 mm, thickness 8.60mm, weight 47.16g. See The Finds Research Group Datasheet 10 by Geoff Egan.

A Medieval lead alloy buckle (early 15th century). The buckle has a circular buckle frame with a central cross-bar. The frame is decorated with a raised, bevelled band along the centre of the frame and beading around the edge. The cross-bar has a central groove with a ridge on either side to secure the pin. These two ridges do not extend on the upper edge of the cross-bar. The pin is made from iron wire wrapped around the cross-bar for attachment.
Several similar examples have been excavated in London, all date to the early 15th century and Egan and Pritchard (1991:67) suggests…

A Post Medieval copper alloy finger ring with buckle design (dating 17th century). The finger ring is constructed from a strip of copper alloy cast to resemble a strap with buckle. The ring is then curved round to form the right shape and the end of the strap is threaded through the buckle. A small rounded projection in the middle of the strip secures the strip and possibly also represents the buckle pin. There appears to be letters along the external surface of the ring but the precise detail cannot be discerned.

Thick circular lead weight, a maximum of 24.94mm in diameter and 14.06mm thick. One face is slightly flatter than the other; the other face is slightly rounded. In the centre is a circular perforation c.11.07mm in diameter. It weighs 42.66g (1.50oz). Assigning a date and function to simple weights such as this one is not easy, but lead weights do seem to have been most common in the medieval and post-medieval periods. Incomplete fragment from a circular horse brooch of later post medieval date (1650-1850). The cast design consists of a circular panel around which is an encircling ring of square pellets enclosed by a similar plain outer ring. The reverse face is p[lain and the remnants of a square iron attachment are positioned on one edge. The break is relatively old and worn. The artefact is a mid grey colour with corroded patina.
It measures 35.0mm length, 43.1mm width is 4.3mm thick and weighs 29.49 grams

A copper alloy sword belt fitting probably dating from the Post Medieval period. It is in the shape of a left with a trifoliate end. There would have been a hook or loop projecting from the opposite end, but this is missing. The object has been folded in half, but the recessed leaf pattern on the front is still clear. It has a light green patina and dates from the 16th or 17th century. It has a length of 20.93mm, width 15.29mm, thickness 5.20mm, weight 4.94g. The front face is undecorated; the reverse face has a vertical bar and projecting loop which has been flattened against the surface of the rear. The rear is also not decorated. A parallel has not been found and the identification is uncertain.

Cast lead alloy fragment from a faceted bar – possibly a gaming piece of unknown date. The fragment is broadly cylindrical. It is possible that the surface of the bar is decorated with a series of designs but these are heavily abraded. The designs consist of a rose and a soldier bearing shield and sword – although these are difficult to see and possibly be a result or corrosion product rather than design. The artefact is a mid grey colour with an abraded patina.

The upper face of the token is decorated with a series of straight ribs forming a vertical and diagonal cross overlaid upon each other. The reverse face is unusually also decorated with a single cross which divides the token. IN each divided quarter is a single large pellet.
The token measures 22.4mm diameter is 4.3mm thick and weighs 10.32 grams.

An incomplete Roman (AD 50-150) copper alloy and enamel T-shape brooch with hinge mechanism, missing part of the pin and one wing, and the lower bow and catchplate. A chain loop extends from the top of the bow. The brooch measures 22.81mm in incomplete length and is 18.34mm across the wingspan (originally c.25.5mm). It weighs 4.5g.
The wings are tubular and the pin head triangular in shape. Roughly half of the pin shaft remains. The axis bar is also visible and copper alloy.

Roman copper alloy bow brooch, 48mm long, 29mm wide and 16mm thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 16.62 grams. The object consists of semi-circular sectioned wings which are decorated with a series of vertical rdges and incisions. The bow, which is circular in section, is decorated with a series of incised lines which join at the central ridge. Below this on the bows shoulder is an eye like protrusion. An incomplete cast copper alloy crotal bell. The bell is divided into two hemispheres by a prominent ridge which runs around the centre of the bell. The upper hemisphere is undecorated and houses two large sound holes. A loop extends up from the top of the upper hemisphere. The loop is square. The lower hemisphere houses the large sound slot. The lower hemisphere is undecorated. The clapper does not survive. The metal is a dark brownish-green colour. Crotal bells date to the 17th - 18th century.

Medieval copper alloy buckle, 60mm long, 28mm wide and 4mm thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 14.45grams. The object consists of a rectangular plate formed of two sheets with a spacer bar (one sheet is missing). The surface is decorated with lines of incised zigzags. The spacer is integral to the buckle loop which is oval and has a pointy protrusion under the pin rest.

It consists of a single disc with slight projection either side, and measures 7.66mm thick. It weighs 3.8g and has a diameter of 11.10mm. The disc alone is 5.11mm thick and would have been one of a chain, making up an armlet or necklet.

A probable Late Bronze Age (1100 BC - 800 BC) fragment of casting sprue, weighing 6.3g.
It is oval in cross-section and measures 15.34x10.95 at the wider end, which has a rough surface. The sprue narrows over 14.97mm to an old break 8.64x3.82mm.
The sprue forms in the channels of the mould through which molten metal is poured in the process of casting, and which subsequently hardens and is removed. Although the colour of the metal suggests a Bronze Age date, it could conceivably date later.

A polished flint axe head dating to the early to mid Neolithic (BC 3500 - 2500). White flint with some grey mottling.
The blade edge is 61mm wide, tapering down to a narrowed blunt end 30mm wide. The blunt narrow end is broken and chipped. The axe is approximately 130mm long. it is oval in section.

The rim itself is triangular in section and the outer surface of the fragment has a black coating.

The outer loop is not flat, but slopes outwards, so that the diameter of the base of the buckle is greater than that of the upper edge. An incomplete Early Post-Medieval (1500-1700) copper alloy belt mount in the form of an acorn, with broken attachment spikes and missing its stem (and probably leaf too). It measures 31.91x14.87x1.41mm and weighs 2.7g.
On the reverse are two worn stumps (the broken attachment spikes). The acorn has a knop at either end and a horizontal rib across the middle. The lower half is decorated with cross-hatching.

Medieval copper alloy purse frame, 74mm long, 6mm wide and 7mm thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 12.73 grams. The object represents about half of a complete frame and consists of a U shape sectioned, curved frame which tapers at one end, terminating in a small sub-rectangular plate which may have formed a loop. The surface is decorated with cross hatched incisions near what would have been its centre and to one side of this are a series of small circular holes.
