A cast copper alloy strap mount: The body of the mount is a sub-rectangle with moulded edges. One terminal is a ‘V’ shape, the other is a deep crescent, which may have originally formed openwork as the terminals do not appear complete. The upper surface is decorated with a high-relief sub- ‘t’ shape. In the field around the high-relief platform there is a series of ‘>

A cast copper alloy probable strap or harness fitting in the form of a bird. The bird is possibly a duck or goose; it has a long slender up right neck with a narrow crest along the apex of the head. The eyes are small circular cells and the beak is narrowed. The body is long in length and has a moulded simplistic wing on either side of the body. The wings have feint moulded decoration. The underside of the bird is hollow and has an integral loop towards the rear of the bird, and towards the front there are two worn stubs which may have been originally a loop. The surface of the artefac…

A post-medieval copper-alloy hooked strap mount (c. 17th century). The tip of the hook is now missing, lost to an old break. The central portion of the mount is circular in plan, with a domed upper surface and hollow underside. At the apex is a rounded projection with a circular rivet hole, basal collar and surmounting knop. At the base of the domed portion, two transverse collars mark the start of the rearward hook. A copper-alloy rivet projects backwards from behind the hook's collars. Read (2008) illustrates a similar example, no. 813, which he dates to the 17th century.

A copper-alloy artefact of probable Roman date. No parallel could be found for this piece. Stylistically, it has much in common with Roman nail cleaners and tweezers (see Crummy 1983: 58-62); however, the form (see below) suggests it is a strap fitting and possibly served a purely decorative function. The artefact has been made from a strip of metal which has been folded widthways, forming two sides of equal length separated by a gap of a few millimetres. The upper side has a perforated, slightly recessed sub-circular loop at the top; this tapers into a collar decorated with two tra…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount / bar) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is broadly sub-rectangular and D shaped in cross section; the edges are bevelled / faceted. There is no decoration present; it is possible the bar may have been decorated with an applied linseed (black coloured) surface. The reverse face of the fitting is irregular but broadly flat and undecorated. Two cast sub-rectangular projections (hooks) extend from either end of the fitting; both are broken. These hooks would pass through the strap leather and hold the fitting in place…
