Cast copper alloy metal hilted sword or 'vollgriffschwerter'fragment.
The fragment is socketed, and is trapezoid in plan, formed of a cast piece of metal with a 'u' shaped opening extending from the base of the trapezoid. There is a cast collar around the shortest edge of the trapezoid. There is metal inserted into the socket, which is circular in cross section towards the apex of the trapezoid and flattens out at the base of the trapezoid to form a lozenge shaped cross section, with a central circular rib and two triangular wings.
It is 56.48mm long, 29.42mm wide across the base with the 'u' shaped opening being 27.06mm wide. It is 17.81mm wide at the apex of the trapezoid and 9.36mm thick. It weighs 78.28 grams.
The fragment is believed to be continental in origin. Steve Matthews (pers. Com) has commented that the restricted width of the hilt suggests that it is not a Hallstatt antenna sword, as these are usually are much wider. The 'collar' is common on late Urnfield swords with metal hilts, however, the example from the Burnham Hoard has horizontal ends at the bottom of the hilt, set with a right angle with the interior opening (the 'O' or omega shape). On almost every example Steve Matthews has seen, the hilts have had pointed tips on the inside with the ends often being set diagonally. It is highly likely that this item is a unique find for Britain, and there is no exact continental parallel known at this time.</description><classification>Vollgriffschwerter</classification><fromdate>-1000</fromdate><todate>-800</todate><TID>2010T509</TID><workflow>4</workflow><created>2012-05-16T16:53:39Z</created><updated>2013-01-25T16:45:04Z</updated><weight>78.28</weight><width>39.42</width><length>56.48</length><quantity>1</quantity><county>ESSEX</county><district>MALDON</district><parish>Restricted Access</parish><knownas>Burnham on Crouch</knownas><fourFigureLat>51.629012</fourFigureLat><fourFigureLon>0.816024</fourFigureLon><imagedir>images/lmclean/</imagedir><creator>Laura McLean</creator><materialTerm>Copper alloy</materialTerm><filename>2010T509 sword B.5.jpg</filename><thumbnail>381671</thumbnail><regionName>EAST</regionName></result><result><id>503441</id><old_findID>ESS-3CBD21</old_findID><objecttype>SICKLE</objecttype><broadperiod>BRONZE AGE</broadperiod><description>BURNHAM HOARD 2010 T509: item BBH.3: sickle blade

It is missing part of its outer edges, pin, outer edge of the catchplate and some of the enamelling due to old breaks. The brooch is flat, circular in form with enamelled decoration on the front face of the plate. This comprises a central circular field containing four sub-triangular fields at the compass points with smaller sub-triangular fields between these, all filled with blue enamel. Central to these are two concentric circles, the inner being enamleed, the outer not. All this decoration is surrounded by a border. The outer edge has a solid knop at the bottom and may have had loops at the top and on bothe sides. The one at the top is missing, on the right side are the splayed ends of another and the one on the left is missing completely. The loop on the right may have always been splayed but could be this shape due to post-depositional damage. On the back of the plate is an integrally cast double lug that is pierced by a separately cast transverse axis bar. At the bottom of the plate is an integrally cast catchplate. This is sub-triangular and bent and broken due to post-depositional damage. It measures 31.32mm in diameter, 2.76mm in thickness and weighs 12.81g.</description><classification>Disc</classification><fromdate>100</fromdate><todate>200</todate><workflow>4</workflow><created>2012-05-16T15:56:20Z</created><updated>2012-05-17T09:39:00Z</updated><weight>12.81</weight><diameter>31.32</diameter><thickness>2.76</thickness><quantity>1</quantity><county>SUFFOLK</county><district>MID SUFFOLK</district><parish>AKENHAM</parish><fourFigure>TM1649</fourFigure><fourFigureLat>52.097154</fourFigureLat><fourFigureLon>1.152082</fourFigureLon><imagedir>images/justineemma/</imagedir><creator>Justine Biddle</creator><materialTerm>Copper alloy</materialTerm><filename>AKE_SF-3C0125.jpg</filename><thumbnail>382203</thumbnail><regionName>EAST</regionName></result><result><denominationName>Jetton</denominationName><district>COTSWOLD</district><objecttype>TOKEN</objecttype><county>GLOUCESTERSHIRE</county><created>2012-05-16T15:54:11Z</created><regionName>SOUTH WEST</regionName><diameter>14</diameter><fromdate>1500</fromdate><materialTerm>Lead</materialTerm><filename>WILT-3CDA28.jpg</filename><thumbnail>381921</thumbnail><creator>Katie Hinds</creator><identifier>David Algar</identifier><obverseDescription>Cross pattée</obverseDescription><id>503449</id><knownas>Lechlade</knownas><old_findID>WILT-3CDA28</old_findID><workflow>4</workflow><parish>Restricted Access</parish><weight>1.77</weight><imagedir>images/khinds/</imagedir><updated>2012-05-18T14:59:00Z</updated><quantity>1</quantity><todate>1700</todate><broadperiod>POST MEDIEVAL</broadperiod><fourFigureLat>51.689402</fourFigureLat><description> An undatable, but possibly Post-Medieval (1500-1700), uniface lead token cut roughly circular and measuring 13-14mm in diameter. Although no exact parallel could be found during an initial search, the token looks rather like a miniature communion wafer, so a tentative religious connection is suggested, and if so, it could be possibly 16th or 17th century in date. </description><fourFigureLon>-1.712075</fourFigureLon></result><result><rulerName>Constantine I</rulerName><denominationName>Nummus (AE 1 - AE 4)</denominationName><district>NEWARK AND SHERWOOD</district><objecttype>COIN</objecttype><county>NOTTINGHAMSHIRE</county><created>2012-05-16T15:53:55Z</created><regionName>EAST MIDLANDS</regionName><diameter>17</diameter><fromdate>319</fromdate><materialTerm>Copper alloy</materialTerm><mintName>London (Londinium)</mintName><creator>Philippa Walton</creator><identifier>Philippa Walton</identifier><obverseDescription>Helmeted, cuirassed bust right</obverseDescription><id>503448</id><old_findID>NCL-3CD903</old_findID><workflow>3</workflow><parish>COLLINGHAM</parish><weight>2.93</weight><mintmark>diamond//PLN</mintmark><reverseType>VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP (or variant)</reverseType><updated>2012-05-16T15:57:00Z</updated><reverseLegend>VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP</reverseLegend><quantity>1</quantity><todate>320</todate><broadperiod>ROMAN</broadperiod><fourFigureLat>53.112737</fourFigureLat><reverseDescription>Victories holding shield inscribed VOT/PR over altar</reverseDescription><description> A nummus of Constantine I dating to the period AD 319 to 320.
