A small copper alloy single loop D-shaped buckle frame with a sheet copper-alloy plate and copper-alloy wire pin still attached. The buckle has a pointed outer edge with a grooved pin rest. There also appears to be a decorative groove at either end of the bar, dividing it from the frame, although this may not be deliberate as the buckle is not well made. The frame is 21mm in length,13mm wide by 2mm thick. The plate shows signs of damage, with an apparently fragmentary edge. It was made by folding a strip of copper alloy sheet around the bar and cutting a pin slot. The plate is now …

An incomplete copper-alloy buckle plate of Hawkes and Dunning Type IIA of late Roman to early Early medieval date. The single plate is sub-rectangular and of openwork design. The half of the plate closest to the frame has straight top and bottom sides and is perforated by three equal-sized holes, the central one of which would have served as a point of attachment for the now-missing pin. In addition to the holes, there is a vertical line of three ring-and-dot punchmarks on this half of the plate. The other half of the plate is less regular, with two trapezoidal apertures creating a '…

A Medieval copper alloy buckle with rectangular frame and integral plate. The frame is much wider than the plate, giving a T-shaped effect. It has a grooved pin rest with a slight moulding to either side on the outside edge. The copper-alloy pin is held within a slot in the plate, pivoting on a separate copper-alloy bar half way along the plate. The housing for the bar is marked on the front by a swelling on both the pin and the frame. The pin thickens where it is within the slot, so that it is the same thickness as the plate. The rear edge of the frame is bevelled as well as the outs…

Late Roman to early Early medieval cast copper alloy military belt buckle fragment of Hawkes and Dunning Type IB. The object consists of part of the buckle frame, in the form of two dolphin meeting mouth to mouth, with two horses' heads emerging from the backs of the dolphins. The buckle was produced in an open cast, and C-shaped scale details were then punched onto the bodies of the fish and a row of Cs representing a dorsal fin onto the base of the horse heads. The same punch may have used to mark the horses' eyes. The marks of rough filing are visible on the reverse. This fragment …

Silver-gilt buckle with a triangular plate, recently broken in two pieces. The oval loop, of D shaped section, is cast in one with the plate. It has a false shield-on-tongue composed of two stepped, crescentic panels, each decorated with a band of interlace now obscured by corrosion. The base of the tongue is an elongated oval, the tip is now missing. At the junction of the loop and plate, on each side of the narrow flange bordering the latter, is a garnet-inlaid collared boss with a beaded rim. A post-medieval copper-alloy double-looped buckle dating to c. 1550-1650. It consists of a complete pointed-oval shaped frame; the pin is missing. The outer edges of the frame are pointed and have moulded decoration, probably of rosettes; further moulded decoration is visible but unclear on the rest of the front of the frame. Both outer edge curves in slightly at the centre of its internal surface. The pin bar is narrowed with further moulded decoration at either end and some possible iron corrosion in the centre of the bar suggests that the pin was composed of iron. The frame meas…

A corroded copper alloy probable buckle plate of probable Early Medieval date, about 650 - 850 AD. The plate is rectangular with worn and damaged edges. In the centre is a silver inlay or piece of silver foil decorated with a triquetra. Other objects with a silver foil include LIN-C0D1C1, and a parallel for the triquetra design is LVPL-918135.
