An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle and plate of medieval date. The object is unusual as it has a rotating clasp for fastening rather than a pin. The buckle, plate and clasp are all separately cast. The buckle is incomplete with only the strap bar and a short length of the frame to either side still remaining. The plate is rectangular in plan with a centrally placed rectangular hole at which point it is fitted around the strap bar of the buckle. Two rivet holes are present on both ends of the open end of the plate and would have aided in attachment to a strap. The upper surface is…

Copper alloy Buckle. Cast rectangular buckle frame with a thickened curved edge and a prominent notch for the pin. Rust staining on the pin bar suggests the pin may have been made of iron, and together with the small size of the object this may tend to confirm a function as a spur buckle. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1400. Length: 16.9mm, Width: 13.2mm, Thickness: 4.1mm, Weight: 2.13gms.
