An incomplete cast copper alloy Trumpet brooch of Roman date. All that remains of the brooch is the semi-circular acanthus moulding flanked by two double banded collars and the D-shaped sectioned lower bow. The bow terminates in a triple banded foot knop and the misshapen catchplate extends from the reverse. The metal has a light brownish-green colour and is worn. The brooch is 41.6mm long, 9.8mm wide, 7.9mm thick and weighs 7.6g. Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.326, fig.185 and date to circa AD 75 - 175.

The obverse legend and type - CONSTANTI - NVS MAX AVG, Rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right - is only recorded in RIC for one known coin of this type with mintmark RS. Copper alloy Brooch. Cast Hinged Colchester Derivative Brooch, comprising tubular wings clenched around an axis bar retaining the stub of a hinged pin, gripped underneath by a triangular section flat-backed bow which tapers to an un-pierced catch-plate; a plain rectangular field on the wings extends either side of the junction of bow and wings. The front of the wings is decorated by three bands of bordered and billeted bead and reel moulding on each side, in imitation of a spring; the reverse is undecorated. Copper alloy buckle plate, as identified by finder. Cast oval-ended plate with engrailed edges; the other end is slotted and folded over to retain a frame (lost). A pair of rivets of diameter 2.6mm secured the buckle frame, while a rivet of diameter 2.2mm and length 4.7mm with a burred back - probably one of a pair, though the other is lost at a tear in the plate - set centrally at the oval end held the plate to the strap. Now folded. Suggested date: Late Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1400-1600. Length: circa 39mm, Width: 14.2mm, Thickness (plate): 1.2mm, Weight: 3.99gms.
