Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A broken and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame. The frame is formed of a pair of oval loops with moulded decoration on their edges. There is an expanded, sub-triangular moulding at each end of the pin bar. This is decorated on the upper surface by three incised lines, the central straight, the others angled. There is a similar moulding on the extant outer edge, slightly larger. This pin bar is trapezoidal in cross-section. Around it the basic pin survives in situ bent upwards at its tip. One of the loops has broken directly at the pin bar moulding…

A complete cast copper-alloy 13th- or 14th-century medieval bar-mount with pendent loop. The upper surface of the bar mount is rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in cross-section. This is riveted on to a sheet loop which narrows at its base and is folded back on itself, terminating in a squared off stop which is joined to the front section of bar (and, originally, through the belt) by a single copper-alloy rivet which survives retained by an oval rove. The pendant sits within the loop at the bottom of the bar and is quadrilobate in form. The edge from which it hangs is flattened, nar…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface, the latter more shallowly; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal, almost triangular cross-section. Small traces of dark brown corrosion product on the pin bar suggest that it might have been made of iron. The buckle frame has corroded to a dark red-brown colour with a dustin…

A corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of early post-medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is bevelled shallowly externally on the upper surface, bevelling echoed internally on the lower. The pin bar has a trapezoidal, almost triangular cross-section. It has hints of moulded terminals suggestive of a post-medieval date. The buckle frame has corroded to a red-brown colour with a dusting of light-green corrosion product. The buckle has been twisted slightly in pro…

A corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed two loops: one oval, the other with an angled outer edge. On one half of the rounded loop a straight projection implies that the buckle had not been filed down. The pin bar extends beyond the loops in knops of trapezoidal cross-section. The buckle is crudely bevelled internally and externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The buckle has some mid-green and grey covering over a red-brown metal. One can see that the buckle h…

A complete single-looped cast copper-alloy buckle probably of early-medieval date. The frame is of simple, oval form with a circular cross-section. The inner edge around which the pin is looped is flattened. The thick wire pin survives well with minimal pitting. The frame is retained within a simple, short plate formed of a folded rectangular sheet. This features a slot for the pin and a pair of rivet holes at the attachment end. The plate has broken at the strips either side of the pin. The lower half of the fold is abraded at one of these strips and one of the rivet holes. Two …

A corroded, damaged and incomplete copper-alloy medieval buckle sheet plate. Just under half of the plate survives; it would have been created from a broadly rectangular strip twice the length. The frame end is recessed to accommodate the frame and has broken at this weak point, with one of the tabs abraded. There is a central slot for the pin at this end. Just below this are two holes through which the folds would have been riveted to each other through the strap; one rivet with an expanded head survives in place. Two further holes towards the attachment end would have functioned in…

A broken and incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of the Hod Hill type, Hattatt's Class B (with side knobs/lugs). The head and therefore the pin are missing, but the rest of the brooch remains, surviving in good condition. The point below the head is narrowed with the brooch having broken at this weak point. Below this is a transverse ridge (W.: 8.85mm). Below this is the bow, a transverse rectangular plate with three transverse ridges with two grooves between. The uppermost ridge, at least, seems to be decorated with finely incised longitudinal nicks. To each side of the plate i…

A slightly corroded and damaged, but complete medieval cast copper-alloy casket key. The key has a seemingly solid stem of oval cross-section with a hollow end; the end has been slightly abraded on one side. The bow is circular in shape with a circular perforation (Ext. dia.: 13.1mm, Int. dia.: 8.5mm). The bow has been bent slightly out of the plane of the stem and has cracked near the junction with the stem, lowermost. At the other end, the bit is rectangular in shape with a pair of rectangular clefts central on either short side creating four wards of broadly equal size. Similar key…

A cast lead pot mend, used to mend a broken vessel in order to lengthen the period of use after damage had occurred. It is broadly sub-oval and flat in profile, with the sections above and below the slot of similar sizes. There are no discernible pottery fragments within the slot. The repair has corroded to a light-grey colour. Unfortunately such repairs are not diagnostic; a wide date range is therefore offered.

A distorted fragment from a cast copper-alloy post-medieval pocket sundial (c. 17th century AD). This example is of the simple ring type. It has been flattened, bent round at both broken ends, the sundial originally having been circular in plan. Part of the copper-alloy ring survives with a rectangular channel cut in the centre. This once contained a separate sliding collar, which is now missing, and which would have attached to the suspension loop (also missing). The remainder of the median area is recessed. On the external surface, above and below the channel, there are inscribed me…
