A corroded fragment from a cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of uncertain type. The fragment represents the lower part of the bow and the upper part of the leg. As implied the bow has broken above the head at a narrow point. From this break it expands from a width of 5.15mm to 9.7mm at its junction with the leg. In profile it is curved. Its upper surface is decorated with a central longitudinal groove. The junction of bow and leg is a rounded continuation of the bow, stepped down very slightly. It is decorated with two parallel arcs of small punch marks. The upper leg beyond is stepp…

A damaged fragment from a cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date (17th century AD). The fragment consists of the pin bar with small parts of the flat sides emerging at one end. The pin bar has a double lobed knop extant at one end. It has a square cross-section and has been bent twice from opposing sides as a result of old damage. Orange/brown corrosion product at its centre suggests that the missing pin was made of iron. The object otherwise has a variable mid-/dark-green surface colour. A double-looped buckle with double lobed knops at the ends of the p…

A pair of slightly corroded and bent, plain copper-alloy sheet rivets which would have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place, one far larger than the other but both of the same construction. The objects are sub-rectangular in form, having originally been broadly hexagonal. They have been folded in on themselves from the sides before being folded back, the folds protruding beyond the sides. They are curved in profile. The object has a variable mid-green patina, the larger with a possible black coating remaining on one surface. This latter has also had one of its corners bent d…

A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy Late Iron age to early Roman Colchester (one-piece) brooch. The head of the brooch has both wings intact; they are plain and short with rounded ends. The do not cover the whole of the coiled spring mechanism, which has three coils surviving to each side, and the chord above; the pin is missing. The iron axis bar is corroded within the spring mechanism with a gap where the pin was. The chord is held in place by a pointed rearward hook. The bow curves in a smooth arc and narrows to a rounded point at the terminal. It is broadly circular in cro…

A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative (two-piece) brooch dating AD 55-100. The head of the brooch has both wings intact; they are shallowly curved. Only half spring mechanism survives to one side; four coils and half of the chord. Half of the iron axis bar also survives corroded in situ. The bow curves in a smooth arc and tapers towards the foot. Just above the flattened head are four small transversely incised lines. These are echoed by further fine, dense transverse lines at the foot. The catch-plate survives well and has a web extending for 24.6mm.…

An extremely worn, bent and scratched early 17th-century silver post-medieval sixpence of James I, First issue, London mint (1603-1604 AD; North 2074 or 2075). The obvious defacing of this coin has primarily removed the designs of both surfaces through scratching.
