A slightly worn and bent, possibly irregular 11th-century silver late early-medieval penny of Edward the Confessor, 'Pyramids' type, struck by the moneyer Spracling probably at Winchester mint (c. 1065 - c. 1066 AD; North 831).
Two small points of copper-alloy corrosion product on the obverse suggest that this coin might be a plated copy; they may simply be accretions.
Although Spracling minted at London as well as Winchester (North 1994, 184, 186), only Winchester coins seem to have sufficiently elongated renderings of the moneyer's name to prevent space for the mint name. The fi…

The eyes, set high on the head, are small and made using tiny oval cabochon garnets set in a double collar of beaded gold filigree. Well above the eyes are two semicircular eyebrows cast in relief and set to either side of a raised crest which divides the skull. The skull i…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead and possibly iron probable weight. Cast conical standing weight with nine vertical ribs on its sides. Ferrous corrosion may indicate either a lost suspension loop, or possibly an object embedded in the weight. The mass may relate this object to a Dublin Viking system of mensuration based on a module of 4.43gms, in which case it might represent 10 units. An alternative interpretation of such objects as playing pieces is also sometimes advanced. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950.
Diameter: 19.1mm, Height: 21.4mm, Weight: 43.57gms.

A sheet copper alloy sword pommel, probably dating to the early-medieval period. The pommel is made from one sheet of copper alloy that has been folded from a flat rectangular base up and over into triangular profiled pommel with a rectangular cross section. The pommel is filled with a lead alloy substance, giving the object quite some weight for its size. The folds of the pommel do not quite touch each other and the lead infill has leached out. Through the centre of the pommel is the remains of an iron rivet or pin; possibly the remains of the tang but with a small diameter. Although…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy Anglo-Scandinavian horse harness cheek-piece dating to the 11th century. Object type: COIN HOARD
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published
Twelve sceattas all of the so-called Porcupine type; these small silver coins represent the earliest form of penny and circulated in England from circa 675 to the middle of the eighth century. These examples were scattered over a relatively large area, about 150m by 180m, and, despite being found over such a wide area, would appear to represent a hoard or part of a hoard dispersed at some point in the past rather than stray losses over time. Porcupine sceattas are generally Continental in origin, being struck in the Frisia area; the only possible exception is the Aethiliraed example a…

Copper alloy buckle. Cast D-shaped rounded section buckle frame with zoomorphic decoration in the form of beast snouts grasping either end of the narrowed strap bar. The beasts are represented deftly but schematically, with a slight constriction between snout and eyes, and a further slight hollowing between head and ears.
