A medieval, shield shaped lead weight dating from 1350-1500AD. There is a raised, central field containing a device that is too worn to decipher with any degree of certainty, but is probably a fleur-de- lys. The weight is 41.7mm long, 31.2mm wide and 12.5mm thick. It weighs 109.66gm. Similar weights are illustrated in Biggs and Withers, 2000, Lead Weights: The David Rogers Collection, pages 41-42.

Lead and shell probable weight. Cowrie shell filled with lead. The shell was trimmed opposite its diagnostic vulva-shaped opening to permit lead to be poured into it; a little lead protrudes at the natural opening of the shell. Once solidified, the lead may itself have been trimmed flat. Though cowrie shells are among exotica characteristic of 'Final Phase' furnished Anglo-Saxon burials, the insertion of other objects into lead weights is more strongly associated with the Anglo-Scandinavian period. Units of 4.07gms and 4.43 gms are respectively associated with Scandinavia and Viking A…

A cast lead steelyard weight of Medieval or later date. It is oval shaped in form and section, with casting seams visible on both sides. At the top of the object are the corroded remains of an iron loop, now mostly missing due to old breaks, the end of which is visible at the centre of the base of the object. The entire object measures 38.35mm in length, 27.51mm in width, 24.75mm in thickness and 124.21g. This is a steelyard weight of probable Post-Roman date, perhaps c.1200-1700 AD.

Lead unidentified object. Cast flat-based conical object with extremely irregular sides, perhaps cast in a hole made by pressing a little fingertip in a bed of coarse sand. The mass could indicate this to represent 4 units of a Scandinavian weight measurement system based on modules of 4.07gms, but the form and poor finish are both unusual rfor such an object. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Post-Medieval, 850-1800 Diameter: 13.2mm, Height: 16.6mm, Weight: 16.34gms.

Lead weight. A complete cast lead alloy standing weight of unknown date. The weight is conical in shape with a circular base and has a central shaft. The base of weight is slightly concave and has an incised circular groove surrounding the shaft, 13.19mm in diameter. The top of the cone is rounded off. The shaft exit at both the top of the weight and bottom is roughly sub-rectangular in shape and the shaft is filled with a fine light soil. The weight is undecorated. Lead Weight. Cast conical weight. An indentation of the base surrounds a central longitudinal hole of diameter 5mm and depth 15mm; it does not appear likely that the hole continued much further, and it may have received a dowel peg. The mass might indicate this represents one averdepois pound or one Tower mark of 160 pennyweight (233gms) - the Tower Weight system was used for bread as well as for coinage, though for either system the weight is probably too heavy.. Further weights, of this form and others, were reported from the same location. Suggested date: Possibly Medieval, 1300…

Lead Weight. Cast conical Weight. An indentation of the base surrounds a central longitudinal hole of diameter 5mm and depth circa 15mm. The mass might suggest this represented three averdepois ounces, though the match is inexact. Round weights of 80 and 85gms are included in the published account of the David Rogers Collection of lead weights (Biggs and Withers 2000, pages 25-6). Further weights, of this form and others, have been reported from the same location as this one. A conical weight of 100gms also came as an unstratified find from Flixborough, where occupation spanned the…

Lead Weight. Cast discoid weight, patinated overall. The mass may indicate a relationship with Scandinavian systems based on modules of 4.07gms or a Dublin unit of 4.43gms, in which case this object could represent 10 units. Further weights of other forms were reported from the same location; of these, a plano-convex weight was within 0.15gms of this weight. Suggested date: Possibly Early Medieval, 850-950. Medieval cast lead-tin alloy shield shaped trade weight with a raised cross on the front. It is shield-shaped in outline with a straight top and convex sides curving in to meet at a point at the bottom. The edges are corroded and laminating and the corners worn. The front is moulded into a raised long cross. It measures 32.7mm in height, 30.8mm in width, 12.9mm thick and weighs 37.6 grams. Similar designs can be seen in Biggs and Withers (2000:43), no. 123 and 121 who suggest a late 12th to 15th century date.

A small cast lead object, probably a weight of Medieval or later date. It is flat, square in form and has possibly been cut or clipped at one end. The back face is undecorated, however the front face has moulded/stamped decoration comprising a cross within a recessed square, possibly with additional decoration of uncertain form in at least two of the quadrants and perhaps all four quadrants. It measures 13.42mm in length, 13.67mm in width, 2.01mm in thickness and 1.66g in weight. This is probably a small lead weight, perhaps an apothecaries weight, a small pan weight or a coin weight …
