Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of copper-alloy casting waste. The fragment is irregular but clearly shows a failed casting of an object, rather than being waste residues. The object is unclear but appears to have been intended to be semi-cylindrical in cross-section, with a curved top and flared base. The base clearly is divided into three claws or 'toes'. The casting somewhat resembles a Late Saxon stirrup terminal. The original object measures approximately 19mm x 11mm x 11mm, but is encased in a 'bloom' of casting waste.

The central element of the design consists of a vertical strand which bifurcates at either end. Hoard of 23 coins, four silver brooches and two silver strap-ends. Coins: Twenty three silver pennies of Eadmund of East Anglia, covering most of the types known for this king. They were found close together and clearly represent a dispersed hoard. The lack of any later coins is compelling evidence for the deposition of this hoard being intimately connected to the invasion of the Danish Great Army into East Anglia in 869 and the succeeding murder of king Eadmund in the same year. 1) North 456, moneyer Baeghelm (fragment, weight 0.35g) 2) North 456, moneyer Bea[...], probably …

The upper surface is smooth and generally flat but very slightly undulating, as if hammered. Each of the short original edges has two raised integrally cast pellets, one at each corner. These pellets have a diameter of 4 to 4.5mm, sloping sides and a flat top; they look rather like imitation rivet heads; one is set within a very slightly lowered square.
