A lead alloy spindle whorl. The whorl is bi-conical and has a central circular hole. It has a diameter of 25.8mm and is 13.2mm thick. Both faces are decorated with five radial raised lines with three raised pellets in each angle. The median rib is thickened. The whorl is in good condition with a creamy yellow patina. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical and are decorated on both faces with raised dots and radiating or zig-zag ribs. They have been found in ploughsoil over the site of Roman b…

A lead alloy spindle whorl. The whorl is sub-spherical and has a circular hole which is not central. It has a diameter of 19.7mm and is 15.5mm thick. The whorl is in good condition with a creamy yellow patina. Helen Geake writes: “Dating of lead whorls is difficult. The drop spindle with which they were used continued in use until the end of the medieval period in London and Winchester (Egan, 1998, “The Medieval Household: Daily Living c1150 – c1450”; and Biddle, 1990, “Object and Economy in Medieval Winchester”), and for perhaps a century longer in Norfolk (Margeson, 19…

A lead alloy circular pan weight which has a diameter of 40.3mm, is 6mm thick and weighs 71.3g or 2 and a half ounces. There are no visible marks or stamps on the weight. Helen Geake writes: “It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle whorls to fishing weights to trade weights.” Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied …

The weight leans to one side. This weight has a mass of 14.7g. It may be significant that it is not far off being half an ounce (Biggs and Withers, 2000). Helen Geake writes: “It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. A worn, rolled and damaged lithic implement, identified as a Palaeolithic flint axe by the finder. The condition of the object, along with the fact that it is not truly bifacial, makes this identification questionable. The axe is roughly oval is plan and in cross-section, with flakes taken off both dorsal and ventral surfaces. There is some damage around the edge exposing a fresh mid-grey coloured flint. The surface has a reddish-brown patina.

A white metal oval disc which is 27.4mm long, 24mm wide and 2.5mm thick. Most of the edge of the disc is rough and is probably broken. It is also curved so one face is concave and the other convex. On the convex face is a scratched design of a crenellated tower or gateway and beneath it some indistinct markings which may be numbers or letters. The other face is not decorated. The British Museum has not been able to identify or date this object but the analysis of its composition (see below) shows that it is not precious metal and therefore the piece is not Treasure under the Treasure …

A cast silver element comprising two figures, a female standing nude with one knee raised, a smaller female figure next to her whose bust ends in a shaft. Broken off at the base. The function of this artefact is uncertain, though it is certainly post 16th Century. The metal (which might be base silver) and facture suggest a relatively recent date. Due to it's undiagnostic nature it is therefore my view that this does not represent Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996.
