Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Wakefield
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Post-Medieval lead alloy musket ball dating from about 1600-1900. The object has been clearly miscast as can be seen by the mismatched/misaligned halves of the ball. Attached to this discarded musket ball is cooled metal in the shape of the mould's channel where the hot liquid would have been poured in. The material is somewhat rough and has a silver colour; only a fragment of the original creamy brown patina exists along the casting seam. Length: 27.1mm; Width: 15.5mm; Thickness: 7.8mm; Weight: 7.55g

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wakefield
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a probable copper alloy jetton that is likely Medieval in date. The edges are severely worn and less than half of the object has survived but some of the design is visible on one side - possibly a double-stranded arcuate cross fleuretty with a pellet in each angle. The material has a dark green patina which has been scratched revealing brass beneath. The reverse is severely corroded and any design is now illegible. An incomplete copper alloy Medieval jetton dating from about 1350 - 1400. One side has a double-stranded cross arcuate fleuretty. The other side is very worn but the design can just be seen to be a Late variant of the King with Shield type. There is an elongated hole in the material and additional damage to one edge. The original border appears to have been removed or otherwise worn away so any inscriptions are no longer visible. Compare Mitchiner number 410. This jetton was issued from 1350 - 1400 and is French. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy spindle whorl of Medieval date. It is plano-convex and both faces are decorated with a pattern of raised lines and dots. There are intersecting and branching lines on one face, and radiating lines alternating with dots on the other. There is a large central perforation which measures 10mm diameter. There is a cavity in the side wall of the perforation where the whorl would have been fixed to the spindle. The lead is patinated to a grey colour. Spindle whorls are very difficult to date because few are found in datable contexts. This type, which is plano-convex with raised …

A copper alloy fragment of a larger object, probably a handle from an item of furniture or a household fixture or fitting. The object is sub-triangular with two concave sides and one broken edge. The broken edge starts to bend forwards and the handle part would have continued here. Only the terminal of the handle, where it fits to the object survives. A conjoined pair of mis-cast or unfinished cast copper alloy strap slides dating from 1250-1400AD. These loops are slightly misshapen, have never been separated, and none of the extra metal remaining from the casting process has been removed. They have a very rough, patchy, dark brown patina. They are 33.3mm long, 24.6mm wide and 3.6mm thick. They weigh 6.03gm. These are probably waste products from a manufacturing site, a suggestion borne out by the discovery of other, similar items of casting waste from the same area.
