A small, cast copper-alloy annular brooch of medieval date (about the 13th century
AD
). It is broadly square (with rounded corners) in form. It is formed of seven oval lobes flanked by moulded transverse ridges connected together (and integral) to form the frame. The frame has a D shaped cross section: the upper surface is domed and the lower surface is flat. Located between two of the lobes is a pin constriction with the remains of a copper alloy pin looped round it. There is no evidence of a pin rest. The surface of the brooch is corroded and pitted. It has a green and brown …

A cast copper alloy annular brooch of Medieval date. The brooch frame is hexagonal and has six forward projecting conical collets. The frame is shaped to the collets. The collets are equally spaced and integral. The settings are empty but still contain a white paste (possibly calcium carbonate) which would have held a stone in place. A pin constriction survives between two of the collets but the pin is missing. The metal is a mid greenish-grey colour, suggesting a white metal coating. A similar brooch can be seen in Egan & Pritchard, p249, Fig: 160. Compare also

A Medieval cast copper-alloy annular Brooch. The brooch has an oval frame which is rectangular in section. From each end projects a neck which bends up and over terminating in a zoomorphic head facing inwards. This head is moulded with rounded ears and worn eye sockets, with textured moulding on the back of the head. Another example of this type of brooch is illustrated in Mills (1999, 56; ref. NM.135). The brooch is decorated with rocker arm decoration on the upper face of the frame, and is gilded. Following Mills this brooch would have dated from the 12th century. The zoomorphic pro…

A Medieval delicate annular brooch with eight raised bosses round the frame. One of the areas between the bosses is worn, suggesting that this is where the now missing pin was attached. The brooch would probably have been gilded, but only traces of corroded brown gilt now survive. The hoop is 1mm thick between the bosses, and the bosses are about 3.8mm wide. The overall diameter is 18.1mm. The brooch dates from the 13th - 14th century and can be compared to NMS-FF2792 and SF-C45D51.

Description: Part of a Medieval probable annular brooch, of which over half of the frame survives. The pin is missing. There was probably a constriction to house the pin on the missing part of the frame. The frame looks to have been roughly oval in shape and at one side it has a projection which tapers to a point and terminates in a trefoil shaped knop. The front of the frame is inscribed with lombardic letters reading: "[...]IC'(IBI)DE'IM'E'SRE[...]". The significance of this is unclear.
The brooch probably dates from the 13th to early 14th century.
Consequently, in terms of age …

An incomplete cast lead alloy possible Medieval or Post-Medieval brooch dating from about 1200 - 1500. The central motif is a foliate low relief design with nine points spreading up and outward (a palm?); there is a border around the central design with a ring-and-dot motif. The brooch has been damaged and there is a roughly crescent-shaped hole below the central design along the border; part of the material has been bent towards the back; the edges are also extremely worn. The reverse has the remains of a broken loop to attach the pin, and a simple catch plate; the pin is now missing…

A cast copper alloy, annular brooch dating from AD1200-1400. The frame is oval in section and of varying thickness. It is narrowed to take a copper alloy pin, which is missing. The outer face is decorated with a large number of closely spaced transverse grooves. The brooch has a patchy, light green patina. It is 26.6mm in diameter and 3mm thick. It weighs 2.69gm.
A similar brooch is illustrated in Griffiths, Philpott and Egan, 2007, Meols: The Archaeology of the North Wirral Coast, plate 25, number 1702.
