Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy uniface token probably dating from the Medieval period. The sub-circular token is unusually thick (5.2mm) and has rounded edges. The design is a square with concave sides divided in half by a line, all executed in raised lines with pellets at key points. There are further pellets at the edge of the flan in two quarters. This design would seem to fit best in Powell's Class 9.

A lead alloy probable Medieval trade weight dating from 1200 - 1600. It is exceedingly worn, so it cannot be conclusively identified. It is triangular in plan ad the front is stepped. No trace remains of any central design. The probable weight has a thick white patina. Compare trade weights such as SWYOR-0DAF66. It is possible this was intended for a 1oz weight.

Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wakefield
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy circular pendant which is probably Medieval or Post Medieval. The sub-circular disc of lead alloy has been pierced by a circular hole. The edges of the hole and the pendant are crisp and straight. This differentiates it from Medieval lead alloy tokens which have more rounded edges and suggests that this is not just a pierced token. There are vestiges of decoration on both faces of the pendant, but sadly the design is too faint to be able to understand it. Compare NLM-A5FB62 and DENO-09DE10.

A complete lead alloy spindle whorl of probable Medieval date. It is plano-convex with a median ridge but has no visible decoration. The central aperture is 9.31mm in diameter and there is no concavity in the side wall. The whorl has a creamy yellow patina which has been recently damaged in one place. Spindle whorls are difficult to date as few are found in secure contexts, but plano-convex examples tend to be assigned a Medieval date.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead alloy probable line weight of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval (1st to 17th Centuries AD). The weight is sub-spherical in shape. The central hole is broadly circular and is positioned centrally. The internal diameter measures 3.9mm. This would seem too small for the object to be a spindle whorl. It is mid to light grey colour, with an even patina. It has signs of being abraded and rolled in the plough soil. This type of weight has been in use for a long period of time and can have multiple functions or uses, particularly for weighting lines used on …

A group of nine lead alloy, globular objects, originally recorded as polyhedral weights, probably of Early Medieval date, but now thought to be Post Medieval buckshot. Each consists of a globule of metal impressed with a number of circular depressions. They range in size from 4.5mm in diameter, weighing 0.43gm, to 5.7mm in diameter, weighing 0.9gm. The others are: 5.49mm, 0.73g; 5.3mm, 0.81g; 5.49mm, 0.72g; and 5.63mm, 0.72g. One further is angular rather than rounded (perhaps squashed) and measures 5.7mm x 4.6mm x 4.3mm and weighs 0.46g. Two additional examples are fused together. Th…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy object, possibly a weight of Early Medieval date. The object is a rectangular cuboid of lead alloy with most of the faces faceted. Each long face has two facets, so it is peaked in the centre of each face. This leaves a lozenge shaped concave area in the middle of each edge between the peaks. The end faces of the solid of flat squares. The lead is patinated to a creamy yellow colour. The object cannot be dated alone, but it is from a known Early Medieval site, so an Early Medieval date is suggested.

The shallow face is decorated with a raised seven pointed star with a pellet in each outside angle. There is also a raised median ridge. The steeper face is decorated with raised radial lines. The central perforation tapers from 10 mm on the shallow face to 9 on the steep face. It is filled with soil and corrosion. The metal has a grey patina.

A lead alloy sub spherical object, originally recorded as a polyhedral weight of early medieval date, AD 800-1000, but now thought to be a piece of Post Medieval buckshot. The object is roughly globular and is marked with four flat, circular faces. It is 5.5mm in diameter and weighs 0.8gm. Compare SWYOR-E809B3. Though originally recorded as a polyhedral weight, the number of similar finds raises the possibility that these are pellets fired from a gun, similar to grape shot but smaller, and of Post Medieval date. Compare examples of buckshot in Harding (2012) "Lead Shot …

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy cloth seal, possibly dating from the late sixteenth or seventeenth centuries. The main body of the seal is roughly rectangular. A narrower, folded strip of metal projects from one end and terminates in a roughly circular loop that fits over an integral rivet on the underside of the main body. The main body is unmarked, but the loop and rivet on the underside carry some lettering, the last two characters of which are EL. The seal is 31.8mm long, 24mm wide and 5.36mm thick. It weighs 10.32gm. It is possible that this is an alnage seal. See http//www.bagseals.org/galler…

A crudely cast lead alloy weight of uncertain date. It is roughly conical with a rounded convex base and an off-centre, circular perforation in the apex. This perforation does not penetrate completely through the weight. It is probably where a loop was attached. It is 43.2mm in diameter and 31mm high. It weighs 203gm. At 7oz, it may have been intended for an 8oz weight when the loop was present and before corrosion.

A cast lead alloy probable mount likely to date from the Post Medieval period. It is circular in plan and The front is decorated with a design of an animal's face, possibly a goat, in relief. The centre of the face is obscured by iron corrosion, but two ears and a tuft of hair can be seen above and the nose can be seen below. There is also a raised border. Iron also projects from the sides of the object, and on the reverse are three protruding iron blobs. These suggest that the mount was attached by iron fittings. The reverse is plain and flat apart from the iron. The lead has a well …

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl of uncertain date, but possibly Roman. It is semi-spherical in shape with a slightly concave upper face and a domed lower face. It is 12.61mm in thickness, 29.83mm in diameter and weighs 54.26 grams. Lead alloy spindle whorls are very difficult to date as few are found in datable contexts.
