Object type: KILN FURNITURE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Calderdale
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of very hard fine grained stone which seems to have been used as kiln furniture, or been in a pottery kiln for another reason, because it has glaze covering one end, which probably ran off the vessels in the kiln during firing. The glaze is clear with patches of rich olive green (iron based?) and on one face is very thick and bubbly, and discoloured to a purple brown. The stone is pink on the outer face where not glazed, and grey inside. The stone has fractured, perhaps due to heat. The stone looks to have been roughly rectangular before it broke. It may have been used as a sp…

The core is grey, the outer parts of the fabric are buff to pink with a brown coating on the outer face and a black coating on the inner face. The inclusions are mainly large angular pieces of quartz which make the surface rough. The rim is flared outwards from the neck, straight, and with a slightly rounded square edge. It is 43.34mm wide, 34.67mm high and 12.29 mm thick. It weighs21.59g. The smaller sherd is a base sherd. The fabric is hard with a fin…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Calderdale
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper dating from the late Neolithic period, about 2500 BC - 2100 BC. It is an oval flake of opaque grey flint with cortex surviving on part of the proximal end. The flake was formed by blows from two striking platforms; the first from the distal end which is now worked, and the second from the end with surviving cortex, which is thus described as the proximal end. The distal end has been worked into a wide scraper with high quality invasive shallow retouch. There is evidence of both percussion and pressure flaking.

The silvering or gilding of the fleurs is missing, but they were probably gilded, making this the Arms of France Ancient (Azure semy-de-lis or). DUR-A54350 notes Irene Szymanski's comment that: "France Ancient remained the French arms until the late 14th century when, in accordance with an edict of Charles V in 1376, the number of fleurs-de-lys was reduced to three. In fact, as coins show, the edict took some time to take effect, …
