Lead mortuary cross cast as a crucifix with the naturalistic figure of the crucified Christ depicted in half relief, as is the scroll at the head of the cross. An oval perforation of length 2.4mm below a curved lug at the top was presumably for suspension of the cross. The figure is flattened by recent abrasions and the cross shaft is indented on both its sides and bent at about knee level on the figure. Such crosses were included in burials of the later medieval period (Gilchrist and Sloane 2005, 88-93), though are often very crudely formed, simply being cut from lead sheet. This cas…

Aluminium aircraft debris. A curved fitting possibly from the undercarriage hydraulic system, and circa 20 fragments of melted aluminium. The only recognisable fragment is itself partly melted. These are thought to be parts of a Lancaster bomber (serial no. PB476) of 12 Squadron which crashed at 29 minutes past midnight on the morning of March 4 1945. Copper alloy brooch. Disc brooch. A plain cast disc with the stubs of a hinged pin lug and a folded U-shaped catch-plate. The front is entirely plain except for a single ring and dot of diameter 3mm close to the edge. It may be that a Roman brooch or back plate has been reused; however, the plate is slightly larger than the simpler forms of disc brooch illustrated by Mackreth (2011), so an imitation of the form may rather explain this piece. Copper alloy and Iron, painted or oiled Late Roman Crossbow Brooch fragment. Cast onion knop surmounting a deep collar with billeted edges. Beyond the collar the object acquires an oval section with two oval projections, presumably the start of a series. Two prongs of iron wire of thickness 1.3mm are bedded in the core of this stem. Erica Darch kindly identifies this as a part of a Crossbow Brooch, a type associated with the later Roman military; in this correcting an identification as a knife pommel. These holes were presumably for the stitched attachment of a bag. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.
