Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded single-looped sub-rectangular buckle of post-medieval date. The strap bar is narrowed and recessed; the pin is missing. The buckle is bevelled externally on its upper face and is flat on the lower. The outer edge is rounded and features a central, projecting ovoid knop defined on either side by diagonal incisions; the knop is bent downwards slightly. The metal is a reddish colour with large areas of dark green corrosion product. A buckle with similarities can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 28; ref. 145), although Whitehead only offers a wide date range.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy single-looped medieval buckle frame with ornate outside edge. As a buckle this is an incomplete example in so far as it is missing its pin and plate. The frame's expanded outer edge has knopped ends which travel outwards slightly. Delineating the knops are fine, raised transverse ridges. There is a pair of similar ridges central on the outer edge which would have acted as a pin rest. The is a further, wider moulding between the central ridges and the ridge by the knop on both sides. The pin bar opposite is offset and narrowed. The frame between is bevelled both in…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An almost complete late early-medieval strap-end of 10th/11th-century date. The object is of unusual form and cast in copper alloy. It is a variant of Gabor Thomas' (2004, 2-3) Class E, tongue-shaped, strap-ends. The object consists of a sub-oval, convex body from one end of which protrudes and expanding, trapezoidal attachment plate. The attachment end features three perforations at its terminal. There central hole retains remains of a copper-alloy rivet. The flanking holes have been broken through in the past. The part of the attachment plate in which they are situated is recessed (…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A circular cast copper-alloy gilded mount of probable medieval date. The lower surface is essentially flat, but heavily corroded. There is a pair of probable rivets near the circumference with a probable rove under one of them. They correspond to a pair of rivet heads on the upper surface. These are mirrored on the other side of the brooch by a pair of punched circles; these do not feature any obvious remains of rivets and there is no clear evidence for them on the lower surface. The upper surface is decorated in relief within a beaded border. The decoration consists of a creature …

An early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) gilded cast copper-alloy mount of 6th-century date and probably from horse harness. It is rectangular with a raised border (Th.: up to 3.6mm) around three sides of the upper surface. Within the border the field contains chip carved and gilded decoration (described below). The lower surface is flat and features an integral rivet of circular cross-section (L.: c. 3.6mm). The rivet protrudes from a central position at the complete end of the mount: a similar arrangement can be seen on a mount recorded on this database (DENO-882046). The opposite short e…

A pair of copper-alloy objects found in the vicinity of each other: plausibly adjoining elements of the same medieval heraldic mount. The first element is small and shield-shaped. From the centre of the top of the 'heater' shaped shield is a protrusion which is now vestigial after an old break (W.: 2.55mm). While the lower surface of the object is flat, the upper surface is moulded in low relief with three lions going left: the arms of England. Traces of gilt survive on the lions. They are within a field of red enamel and can be described heraldically as 'gules three lions passant gua…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A pin cast in copper alloy of probable early-medieval date (mid-late Anglo-Saxon). The pin has a polyhedral head (9.0 x 8.55 x 7.55mm), formed from a cuboid with its corners cut off; the triangles and lozenges thus formed are not regular. The four lozengiform fields round the edges are decorated with three scored diagonal lines in two rows. This is unusual as many polyhedral pins feature ring-and-dot decoration (see e.g. Hinton 1996, 22; fig. 9). Below the head the shaft is faceted, and of crudely octagonal cross-section. Each face is decorated with a row of punched circles. Belo…

The shank has a square cross-section and a terminal which has been hammered flat. The head of the mount is in the form of a winged creature with head turned backwards. It is moulded in low relief with the edges finished in the shape of the animal's limbs, head and wings. Areas of the field not occupied by the animal are slightly lower. The object is formed of a broadly U-shaped plate folded over on itself such that is is L-shaped, albeit at a slightly obtuse angle. The two elements are joined with an extant rivet at the top of the 'L'. The terminal at which the two elements are attached are slightly expanded, with one more rounded than the other. A slightly corroded, almost complete cast copper-alloy harness pendant of medieval date (c. 14th century). The octofoil artefact is relatively unusual and elaborate. An incomplete copper-alloy artefact: probably a late early-medieval/medieval scabbard chape (c. 12th century AD). The object is formed of a broadly rectangular lower plate with an arm protruding up from it at a slightly oblique angle to the perpendicular. This upper arm has been bent backwards just below the halfway point, at an angle of around forty-five degrees. The lower section bends back on itself at the end opposite the arm.
