A lead alloy 'pot mend', probably dating from the medieval period. The pot mend comprises two sub-oval discs joined by a thick central shank and was used to mend a broken vessel in order to lengthen the period of use after damage had occurred. Although very hard to date on their own, some pot-mends do date to the Roman period, although the majority date to the medieval and post-medieval period, c. AD 1300-1550.

A Medieval to post-Medieval vessel foot from a copper alloy cooking vessel (c. 1250-c. 1650 AD). The object is sub-rectangular in plan and cross-section throughout its length. It is undecorated but the front retains a raised central vertical rib. The base of the foot is now worn, broken and rounded, but would have resembled an animals' paw. The top of the foot is broken off beneath where it would have joined the vessel. The underside of the base retains a black substance, probably consolidated soot. Cast cooking vessels seem to have come into use in the second half of the 13th cen…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy vessel of medieval date. The fragment is part of the leg of a probable cooking vessel. The leg is roughly D-shaped in section with a concave reverse, rounded edges and two raised ridges on the front. Both ends of the fragment are very worn and the leg is undecorated. The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is worn. The fragment is 58.8mm long, 32.8mm wide, 11.4mm thick and weighs 74g. While it is not possible to allocate this fragment to a specific type a mid 13th to 16th century date is generally accepted for copper alloy cooking vessels.

A cast copper alloy Medieval or Post Medieval vessel fragment. It is part of an arm from a tripod ewer, pitcher or cauldron, and would have formed an angled link between the body of the vessel and its rim. A similar arm would have matched it on the opposite side of the vessel, and a handle for suspension would have been attached through both arms. ( Egan 1998, fig131, no.446). The fragment includes a flat rectangular surface that would have been soldered to the vessel body, and a length of rectangular shank which leaves the plate at an angle of 30 degrees. The fragment measures 38m…

A rim sherd of a Roman Vectis Ware ceramic vessel (c. 43-c. 350 AD). This coarse ware sherd is burnished on the external face and the breaks are abraded. Height: 36.92mm; width: 37.38mm; thickness: 11.26mm. Weight: 15.53g. 'Vectis ware is hand-made, well finished and relatively hard, being barely scratched with the fingernail. Its internal and external surface is partly reddish-yellow (Munsell Color 5YR 6/6), which is the colour yielded by a characteristic oxidised crust which is usually weakly visible due to a more general darkening of the final surface burnishing. The colour prod…

A rim fragment of Medieval/ Post-Medieval (1200-1800) copper alloy cooking vessel, measuring 40.04x31.97x3.81mm and weighing 17.1g. The rim is D-shaped in cross-section, being flat to the outside surface (which is blackened from being used over an open fire) and curved on the smooth inside surface. The vessel is otherwise 2.80mm thick. All breaks are worn. There are also traces of black on the inside surface. Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c.1200-1800 for serving and cooking. Butler and Green (2003; 15) state 'there is evidence that (cast copper alloy)…

A corroded and incomplete probable lead-alloy vessel handle of Medieval to Post Medieval date. This artefact is broken at both ends and exhibits a substantial curvature through the body. Towards the upper end of the upper surface of the handle are a series of raised horizontal ridges separated by a large raised cylindrical ridge (17.1 in thickness); this might possibly be related to an attachment for a lidded vessel as Egan (1998: 188 fig. 151) . From the lower five ridges the body tapers to a width of 11.3mm, although there are small losses at the exterior width of the tapered end. …
