The exterior of the sherd has three parallel grooves above an impression which may be another groove that has been widened by damage. Pottery body sherd made of smooth grogged (containing crushed clay) Grooved Ware fabric. The fabric looks polished and baked and it is hard to see any inclusions. It appears to be blackened on the interior of the sherd and a buff colour on the exterior. There are also depressions on the exterior of the sherd which may have resulted from the erosion of inclusions out of the matrix. This type of fabric is most probably Grooved Ware, dating from c.2900-2400 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming).

The distal end is one large low-angled flake removal with a hook-notch near the left end. The proximal edge also has a fractured protuberance. A cast, copper-alloy mount of the Medieval to Post-Medieval period. The mount is rectangular in plan with an integrally-cast terminal at one end consisting of opposing, outward-facing crescents, joined at their centres across the width of the mount by a moulded, rectangular bar and a circular loop at the apex. The loop is drilled, probably to accept a rivet. The opposite end of the mount is broken squarely across another, drilled rivet hole. No rivets remain.
