Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy harness mount fragment. The mount is convex with a large central circular knop. Projecting from the knop are four elements arranged in a similar way to the arms of a cross. To either side of the knop are two trianguar, pointed elements, one of which has lost its point. The break appears relativly fresh. The two further elements are possibly the remains of circular attachment loops, terminated by worn breaks. The surface of the object is pitted and worn, with a mid green patina. It is medieval in date.

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy hooked fastener probably dating to the ninth century AD. The fastener is triangular in shape with a hook extending from the apex. At the widest part of the fastener are two circular perforations. It measures 17mm in length and 10mm in width. It is clear that fasteners such as these performed a range of functions in securing clothing including headgear, bags or purses, despite often being known as garter hooks following the discovery of a pair under the knees of a ninth century skeleton at Winchester. Similar fasteners are illustrated in Macgregor and Bolick (1993) p. 190.
