Object type: CLOTHING FASTENING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: HERTFORDSHIRE
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation ![]()
A copper-alloy strap loop of medieval date. Several examples of these artefacts have been found in excavations in London, mostly in layers dating from the late 13th to late 14th centuries AD (G. Egan and F. Pritchard; 1991; pp. 232-235). It is thought that their purpose was to hold down loose straps.
The object consists of a trapezoidal frame and has an external projection of circular section, which extends outwards from the centre of the shorter vertical side. The sides of the frame are of rectangular section.
The strap loop measures 11.4mm long, 10.8mm high and 1.7mm thick. The…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: HAMPSHIRE
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation ![]()
A cast copper-alloy medieval strap-slide with a pair of short pointed internal projections (c. 2.8mm in length). It is trapezoidal in shape with rounded corners. The rounded outer edge is thicker, at 3.05mm, than the inner edge, at 2.0mm. A similar example can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 234; ref. 1262). The published example came from a later 14th-century context. It is not quite as well-made as this object; the inner 'sub-loop' is better defined, by moulded side protrusions before a constriction as the outer 'sub-loop' begins.

A cast copper alloy cosmetic mortar. The cosmetic mortar is an elongated crescent in profile with an integral collared loop beneath the centre. The body of the mortar is oval in section and tapers in width and depth towards each terminal. The terminals are rounded and well worn, but were possibly once knopped or zoomorphic. The object is undecorated. Most of the original surface of the mortar has worn away; the metal beneath is pitted an…

A copper alloy belt hook with a flat decorative panel at the front and two strips folded over onto the reverse. The central part has opposing curved indentations above and below a wider section with three lobes on each side edge.
This object can be compared to the central part of the fitting BUC-EB0E13 recorded on this database. It lacks the rectangular loop in this and the published p…

A copper alloy polyhedral pinhead with traces of gilding. The pin has a small length of circular-sectioned shaft surviving, with a ridged collar below the head.
