Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A Medieval cast copper alloy zoomorphic vessel spout probably dating to the 15th century AD. The cylindrical spout was cast separately from the rest of the vessel and soldered on via the long sloping 'C' shaped arm. The spout itself is tubular and terminates in a dog's head with open mouth from which protrudes the end of the spout. The dog's head has a moulded nose, prominent, rounded brow and sub-oval ears that extend slightly above the flattened head; the eyes are not distinguished. Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy seal matrix. Cast vesica or elongated oval shaped matrix with incised central motif and legend around the edge. The central motif appears to be a stylised fleur de lis, a symbol with strong Marian and Trinitarian associations. The legend, which is clearer on one side than on the other, appears to read: + ?S?I :?E - - C / . HEVE+?VINT. The back of the matrix bears the stub of a lug at the base of a relief fleur de lis; a motif whose three petals rise from a straight horizontal bar, a similar convention to that appearing on the matrix itself. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

The front is decorated with a central four petalled flower with sepals within a circular border and an elaborate scroll-like foliate design. A worn indentation is present on the reverse to mark where the attachment loop would have projected from, though this no longer remains. Copper alloy with white metal plating pendant. Cast bracket, resembling the Greek character Omega in shape. A steel spindle (lost) was formerly held between the feet of the 'letter', its position marked by ferrous corrosion. A monogram, probably GR, is stamped at one of the feet of the 'letter', probably on its reverse which is smoothed and polished by wear. A pivoting T-bar with cuboid ends is looped about the bracket at an apical constriction. The purpose of the object is unknown, though it appears to have been robustly made and shows no sign of distortion save for the loss of its s…

Record ID: LIN-E9EDE4
Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of copper-alloy casting waste. The fragment is irregular but clearly shows a failed casting of an object, rather than being waste residues. The object is unclear but appears to have been intended to be semi-cylindrical in cross-section, with a curved top and flared base. The base clearly is divided into three claws or 'toes'. The casting somewhat resembles a Late Saxon stirrup terminal. The original object measures approximately 19mm x 11mm x 11mm, but is encased in a 'bloom' of casting waste.
