The central perforation has a diameter of 9mm and there is no internal cavity in the wall of the perforation. One face is decorated with moulded raised ribs in groups of three forming fan like motifs, radiating from the perforation to the outside edge. Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but distorted lead alloy finger ring. The ring is small, possibly for a child or little finger, and has a raised circular bezel that contains a dark blue galss or paste. Either side of the bezel on the shoulders is two smaller circular mouldings that may have once also contained inserts. The band extends from beneath the latter and is plain and circular in section. The ring is similar in form to some Roman finger rings, however the size, material used and quality may suggests a much later date, possibly the post-medieval or even early-modern period.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A very crude cast lead alloy, weight of probable medieval date (1300-1550). The weight is sub triangular in plan and sub rectangular in section. It is patinated to a creamy white colour. An iron wire is embedded in the weight forming a loop out of the top so that it could be suspended. There is a strange spiral pattern cast into the reverse of the weight. This is probably an unintentional result of the method of manufacture used. The object has a mass of almost exactly 7oz. Allowing for damage and corrosion, this could have perhaps been intended as an 8oz weight. Similar exam…

A moulded or cast lead alloy token, or tally, possibly for gaming. The reverse has a small raised central pellet which is surrounded by groups of alternating radiating lines, reminiscent of windmill sails or wheel spokes, set at opposing angles. It is unclear exactly what the aretfacts were used for, and indeed dating them is also quite subjective, but assuming the feat…

Lead alloy possible toy gun fragment. Cast fragment from the wall of a tubular object. If the identification offered is correct, a facetted side would represent the metal barrel of a flintlock or wheel lock muzzle loading pistol, with a curving billeted projection representing the lock which would be cocked to fire a real gun. A pelleted border and other features modelled in low relief may indicate a decorated lock plate. Patinated overall. Neither the material nor the thin walls of the putative barrel would seem apt for use as a toy firing projectiles, though a measure of powder migh…
