Pottery rim sherd from a bowl with a 'Cornish flanged' (Quinnell, 2004, p.124) rim. The flange below the rim is pointed and horizontal, but damaged, and angled at about 90 degrees from the body of the bowl. Above and below the flange are recessed grooves which help to define the flange from the body of the bowl. The fabric is is a light browny grey colour throughout and contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The exterior surface looks as if it was originally black-coated, now mostly worn …

Group of seven undiagnostic pottery sherds, including three base sherds and one twisted everted rim sherd, probably all from jars. The surfaces and cores of the sherds have been oxidised to a light brown colour. There are carbonised remains on the exterior surfaces of most of the sherds. The fabric looks, from macroscopic analysis, to be gabbroic, as it has inclusions of mica, white felspar and a dark grey mineral which could be augite. Gabbroic clay, sourced on the Lizard, was extensively used during the Iron Age in Cornwall. Late Iron Age in date (Carl Thorpe pers comm).

Pottery bar-lug guard sherd of grass-marked ware. The curve of the raised guard was used to protect the bar behind and beneath it, and the rope attached to the bar, from the open fire that the pot was suspended over. The surface and core of the sherd has been oxidised to a light brown colour. The surface of the pot has a thick layer of carbonised material all over the exterior. The fabric looks, from macroscopic analysis, to be gabbroic, as it has inclusions of mica, white felspar and a dark grey mineral which could be augite. Pottery base sherd, possibly from a shallow platter, of grass-marked ware, with the impressions of grass or chaff clearly visible on the base of the sherd. The surface and core of the sherd has been oxidised to a light brown colour. The surface of the pot has a thick layer of carbonised material on the exterior, just above the base. The fabric looks, from macroscopic analysis, to be gabbroic, as it has inclusions of mica, white felspar and a dark grey mineral which could be augite. A cast copper alloy pot leg from a copper alloy vessel. The fragment consists of the foot and the leg. The object has a curved section. The foot is decorated with four vertical ridges. The reverse is undecorated. The surface is extremely pitted and worn, as is the break. It has a dark brownish-green patina. Due to a lack of context it is not possible to closely date this object, although it is medieval to post medieval in date.

A lead-alloy object which is probably a leg from a metal vessel. No parallel could be found for this piece and a date of late medieval to post-medieval is tentatively suggested. The attachment, located at the top, consists of an irregularly shaped flat plate with rounded edges and a sub-circular rivet hole. The leg itself angles downwards from the attachment plate and is roughly ovoidal. Both the upper surface and the underside appear to have cast decoration. The upper surface bears a vertical ridge with three equally spaced, shorter transverse ridges along it; the underside has a t…

A cast copper-alloy leg from a cauldron. Probably dates from the late medieval to post-medieval period. The heavily corroded leg appears to be of zoomorphic form. It is sub-trapezoidal in plan and of trapezoidal section, tapering in width and thickness from bottom to top. Protruding from the otherwise flat bottom face is a rounded projection, probably designed to represent a toe. The top edge, which would originally have adjoined the vessel, is jagged. The object measures 29.8mm long, 27.9mm wide and 11.4mm thick. The weight is 29.26g.

Medieval vessel; Rim sherd of coarse, late medieval, Midlands pottery. The sherd has a broad, squared rim and is decorated with two horizontal incised lines, about 10mm below the lower edge of the rim. The curvature of the sherd indicates that the vessel originally had an internal diameter (at the rim) of about 100mm. There are the remains of a purple-brown glaze on the interior of the sherd. The fabric of the sherd is dark grey with few voids but frequent inclusions of white and orange, non-crystalline material. The inclusions are mostly quite small (approx 0.5-1mm). Length 76.9mm,…

An incomplete cast pewter measure of Post-Medieval date, probably seventeenth century (AD 1600 – AD 1700). Overall length: 97.2mm; maximum diameter: 60.1mm. Weight: 196.56g. The body of the measure (or tankard) is baluster-shaped and has a length of 79.8mm and a maximum diameter at the girth of 60.1mm. A copper alloy handle from a Roman patera or skillet. The flat handle is broken with the circular terminal which would have contained a suspension hole missing. It is 92.6mm long, 83.3mm wide and 13.4mm thick. The handle has concave ends, the wider one which would have continued into the vessel rim, and a narrower end where the missing terminal would have been. The handle is made from two pieces of metal. The top piece was probably cast with the rest of the vessel, but breaks half way along the handle. The lower piece is attached by two copper alloy rivets which pass through both piec…

Early Early-Medieval (c.500-600) sheet copper alloy bowl with an iron handle, broken and in two pieces. The base is slightly squashed - it is mostly flat but was probably originally slightly convex. It is 120mm in diameter. The body is globular with an everted rim, which springs into two opposing triangular projections or lugs c.60mm wide and c.30mm tall. Each lug has a 6mm diameter piercing at the centre. One of these retains the end of a circular-sectioned iron handle. The surface of the bowl is obscured by earth deposits and slight corrosion. However several patches show a coppery …

a copper alloy medieval or early Post-Medieval vessel fragment. It is a bar, oval in section, incomplete at one terminal due to old breaks, and flattened off at the opposite terminal to form a foot making an angle of 45 degrees to the horizontal. It measures 48.15mm in length and 11.88mm in width, (19.14mm at the foot) and weighs 44.9gm. It could be part of a leg from a tripod ewer or caldron, part of a vertical angled loop for attachment for a handle for a cauldron, or a support projection from a chafing dish. Examples of these forms from medieval London are illustrated in Egan 1998,…
