Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire

A copper-alloy stirrup terminal of 11th century date. Several examples of this category of artefact are recorded on the PAS database (see, for example, SF-FEFD92). Williams illustrates a similar example in his Finds Research Group datasheet (No. 24; 1997; fig. 5). The object, which represents one of the two bottom corners of the stirrup, takes the form of a zoomorphic foot. The foot angles upwards from the flat base at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees. Evenly spaced around the rounded outer edge of the foot are three projecting toes. At the top of the outer face is a mould…

An incomplete copper-alloy Langton Down variant brooch of mid 1st century date (R. Hattatt; 1982; pp. 80). The much damaged head takes the form of a cylinder, which would originally have enclosed the now-missing spring. An unusual feature of this brooch is that there is a ninety degree angle between the top section of the bow and the vertical main section. A moulded transverse ridge marks the transition between the head and the top section of the bow and the latter element is also decorated with two less prominent transverse ridges. The vertical section of the bow has a longitudinal…

A corroded and bent lead Dyer's cloth seal from Colchester, Essex. Similar seals from London dyers have been found (see G. One disc bears the stamped legend: '....LISH/COL/[C]HESTER/DYE. The other disc is badly damaged and possibly has a heraldic image. The seal measures 28.8mm long, 25.2mm wide and 8.1mm thick. An incomplete and corroded copper-alloy Disc brooch of 2nd century date (see R. Hattatt; 2000; pp. 344). The current form suggests that the brooch would originally have been circular in plan. The upper surface has a slightly recessed central cell surrounded by two concentric cells. Both of the outer cells contain traces of enamel, most notably the outer one, which has a light blue setting flanked on either side by a darker blue or black one. The hinge and catchplate are located at opposite ends of the reverse. The hinge comprises two parallel perforated lugs (one damaged), joined at…

A copper-alloy belt mount or horse harness decoration of probable 17th century date. The mount appears to be a representation of an acorn. The shell is defined at the top by a transverse ridge and is decorated with cross hatched indentations, each panel containing a single idented dot. A broken protrusion extends downwards from the underside of the shell. The acorn section tapers upwards, terminating in a rounded top edge. Two lead weights of probable medieval to post-medieval date. These two pieces were found in the same field and are clearly related in terms of date and function. Both are crudely made sub-hexagonal discs which have been cut from a sheet of lead. Both weights have linear markings in the surfaces, but these appear unintentional, probably the result of vegetation being caught in the original sheet casting. The first weight (no. 07/39 - 102) measures 29mm in diameter and 3.8mm thick, the other (no. 07/39 - 103) is 28mm in diameter and also 3.8mm thick. 102 weighs 22.3g and 103 is 23.…

A lead 'nesting cup' weight of probable late medieval date. For similar examples, see G. Egan, 1998, pp. 309-10. The weight would originally have been circular in plan, but has become squashed. The base is flat and the sides angle upwards from the base at approximately 70 degrees. Closely spaced pellets extend around the flat rim and a single pellet is situated at the centre of the base. The object measures 21.4mm in diameter, 5.4mm high and weighs 6.46g.
