Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire

The rim and shoulder of a curved-rimmed cooking pot. There is sooting under the rim and on the exterior, and a groove at the shoulder. The fabric is shell-tempered and similar to the fabric of Dales ware jars suggesting a north, rather than south-Lincolnshire or Northampton area of manufacture. It dates from the mid-2nd to the 3rd century. Vessels found with sooting should be handled carefully, since the sooting could indicate the type of wood used for cooking.
